  • 14 Oct 1938: BIOGRAPHICAL. Late Mr John Matthews ONCE NOTED S.E. COLT-BREAKER
The late Mr John Matthews, of Mundalla, whose decease was briefly noted in our last issue, was considered one of the best "rough-riders" in the South-East in his youth, having achieved a good deal of notoriety as a colt-breaker on Cairnbank Station, Lucindale.
Born at Lucindale on December 18th, 1870, Mr Matthews was employed for 13 years by Mr John Hensley, then owner of the station, as a coltbreaker, and many were the "wildeyed" colts that passed through his hands in days when horseflesh was held in much higher regard than it is today.
When about 30 years of age, he came to Mundalla, where he married Miss Florence Riches. The deceased gentleman was one of Mundalla's most estimable citizens, and his labor in many causes was always sought after. His sudden passing is mourned by his wife and family, comprising Violet (Mrs R. Clark, Pine Hill), Maude (Mrs J. Crocker, Pooginagotic), Ivy, Bert (Bordertown), and Jack (Mundalla). He made a wide circle of friends.
Despite the brief notice, the funeral to Mundalla cemetery was a most representative one. Bearers were Messrs W. Gooding, T. Herring, P. T. Rabone, G. Dinning, J. Milligan, and Ross Hunt. The Rev. R. F. Woods conducted the burial service.3

  • 18 Jun 1943: Pretty Wedding at Pooginagoric MAYES—MATTHEWS
Pooginagoric Cong. Church was the scene of a pretty wedding on Monday, June 7, when Miss Ivy Grace Matthews, daughter of Mrs J. Matthews, of Wolseley, was married to Mr James D. Mayes, son of Mrs Mayes, of Nhill, Victoria. The church was tastefully decorated by friends of the bride. The Rev. S. W. Parker officiated, and Mrs D. B. Rowney, of Bordertown, presided at the organ.
The bride, who was given away by Mr J. T. Crocker, was becomingly gowned in a dusty pink frock with with navy accessories. She also car- ... of mixed flowers made by Mrs G. Dyer. She was attended by Miss Joyce Clark, in a saxe blue frock with navy accessoires. She also carried a posy of mixed flowers. Mr William Clark was best man.
During the signing of the register, Master Ray Matthews sweetly rendered the song, "Rose of Tralee".
As the bride left the church, two horseshoes were hung on her arm by her two small nephews, Eric Crocker and Lindsay Clark.
After a sumptuous breakfast, attended by near relatives of the bride and groom, the happy couple left for Adelaide, where the honeymoon is being spent. The bride travelled in a dark Airforce-blue jumper suit, with navy accessories. Their future home will be at Custon.6
