  • 25 Apr 1903: WEDDINGS. SHARP—WIMBLE.
A wedding took place on April 15 at Wesley Church, Lonsdale-street, Melbourne, when Scott, son of the late Mr. John Sharp and Mrs. Sharp, Inveresk, Jolimont, was married to Beatrice May, youngest daughter of the late Mr. Nehemiah Wimble. The ceremony took place from the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Berry, East Melbourne, the bride's sister and brother-in-law, and was performed by the Rev. William Williams, of Geelong, also brother-in-law of the bride, assisted by the Rev. Alwyn Ewen, of Cairns Memorial Church. The church was decorated with white flowers and greenery, an arch being formed before the altar, underneath which the bridal party stood.
Each pew had a bunch of foliage, with large white butterfly amongst it. The bride was given away by Mr. Howard Berry, and wore white crepe de chine over glace silk, made with full skirt, shirred at the yoke end knee; bodice had transparent neck and-yoke of fine lace; sleeves of elbow length, and had deep frills of the same lace; wreath of orange blossoms, and tulle veil, which had been worn by her mother and her sisters. She carried a bouquet of white flowers. Her jewels were diamond pendant and diamond bracelet. There was one bridesmaid, Miss Betha Thomas (cousin of the bride). She was in cream voile, skirt tucked from the waist down; bodice made in bolero style, cut high at the back, with deep-pleated front, the sleeves having long angel ends from the elbow; black picture hat; bouquet of pink flowers, with pink streamers. Mr. Andrew Sharp, brother of the bridegroom, was best man. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Berry held a reception at the Masonic-hall, Collins-street, where tea was served to about 200 guests. The hall was decorated with white flowers and autumn leaves, the organ and platform being a complete mass of foliage, palms, and white flowers; while the autumn tints of mountain ash showed up in bright relief.
The initials of the bride and bridegroom were worked in white on a background of green leaves. A white arch and gateway, with bell lunging in the centre, was arranged at the end of the hall, where Mr. and Mrs. Scott Sharp received congratulations. The bride's going-away gown was a blue frieze sac coat and skirt, with lace collar; and black picture hat, relieved with blue under the brim. Mr. and Mrs. Sharp left by express for Sydney the same afternoon. Scott Alexander Sharp15

  • 23 Jul 1910: TILLAGE AND PASTURE. THE BERWICK DISTRICT. FODDER GROWING FOR DAIRYING.
    (part of article)
    VARIATION IN SOILS.
East of Berwick the country falls into Cardinia Creek, on the other side of which the land does not present so rich an appearance, although where it has been cultivated the results are better than the soil in its natural state would suggest. Land values here are on a lower basis, recent sales placing the price at about £8, per acre. Those who have succeeded in turning these soils to good account agree in their testimony that satisfactory results cannot be obtained except by cultivation. In handling this land Mr. John Bunting finds in dairying, and pig raising his most profitable returns.
    MAKING POOR LAND GOOD.
In his experience the land does not naturally produce a good growth of grass, and he is steadily ploughing up the whole of his farm. The transformation thus effected is very striking. In its native state ferns, scrub and rubbish are the main products of the soil, whereas, thoroughly tilled and fertilised with about 1 cwt. of superphosphate to the acre, excellent crops are harvested. The chief deficiency of the soil is in humus, hence every particle of farm yard manure made on the place is carefully conserved and utilised. Not the least of the advantages of dairying and pig raising found here is in the steady improvement in the quality of the land which they induce. The crops grown are fed to the cows, and their manure, supplemented by the addition of superphosphate, assists materially in increasing the soil fertility. As Mr. Bunting puts it—"The land feeds the cow, and the cow feeds the land."
    UTILISING THE UPLAND SOIL.
Another feature of Mr. Bunting's management is subdivision. The farm, consisting of 103 acres, is subdivided into seven paddocks, with still further dividing fences being constructed. This arrangement is described, as enabling a proper system of rotation to be adopted, which with liberal fertilising forms the basis of success. Although the flats of the Cardinia Creek are limited in area, these consist of a deep, black alluvial soil, on which maize grows in profuse abundance. It is now regarded as quite practicable to obtain a good strike of lucerne on this land. Even higher up on the rough hillsides Mr. Bunting states that he has grown from two to three tons of oaten hay to the acre. Here and there belts of a sandier class of land throughout the flats are found specially good for potatoes, in one instance an average of six tons of Carmans to the acre having been dug.
    VALUE OF RAPE.
Rape growing is one of Mr. Bunting's successes. This is found to provide an early and nutritious yield of green stuff, and proves especially valuable as pasture for the pigs. The value of sufficient cultivation for this crop is exemplified in one paddock, where the portion which was twice ploughed is much more advanced than that only ploughed once. In addition to the Algerian, New Zealand white oats are found to do well if got into the ground under a good tilth not later than March. Vetches sown along with the oats as a mixture, are found to add considerably to their value as a daily fodder.
Oats after potatoes always yield heavily. The rainfall here is so liberal during the summer months that two crops a year are generally taken off the one piece of land. After a field has been cropped for about three years it is sown down and kept in pasture for a similar period. A mixture of rye grass and clover is found to give the best results. Mr. Bunting states that his pig-keeping is even more payable than dairying. John Bunting6
  • 3 Sep 1910: KEEPING GOOD PIGS.
The pure Berkshire sow shown in the illustraltion herewith is submitted as an instance of the general quality of the pigs kept on the farm of Mr. John Bunting, of Beaconsfield, whose methods of working were mentioned recently in one of "The Leader" travelling articles. Mr. Bunting stated that he found pig keeping so profitable an adjunct of his dairying that it actually gave him better returns than even the production of cream. The great essentials to success, however, he was careful to note, consisted first, in keeping nothing but the best quality, and second, in providing abundance of fodder, so as to prevent there being any stint in the feeding. Mother*Alice Betts b. 1869, d. Apr 1960
Birth*17 Jul 1905 Bathurst, NSW, Australia, #B20916/1905 (par Adolphus H & Alice L) - as Clifford TOLHURST.1
Military*30 Jan 1929Enlisted for military service: Royal Australian Air Force Minute Paper 30 Jan 1929
D.P.S.:- (in absence A.M.P.)
No.1294 ACI. TOLHURST. C., No.1 A.D., LAVERTON.
Lt.-Colonel A.H. Tolhurst, late Chaplain A.I.F. and now Chaplain at the Repatriation Hospital, Caulfield, called to see me to-day in regard to his son, mentioned above, who is now employed as an A.H.G.
He points out that his son has been in the Service about 12 months as an aircraft hand (employed mostly in fatigue duties I understand), that he is engaged to be married, and that he has received an offer from his prospective Father-in-law to share his farm with him.
Young Tolhurst points out to his father that the normal procedure, under existing regulations is to purchase his discharge. He represents, however, that he is not in a position to do this.
His father who has been known to me for many years, it suffering from war injuries and has been an inmate at Caulfield for the last b months and is still an out-patient there. He is unable to undertake parish work and, although he would be willing to assist his son in purchasing his discharge if he were in a position to do so, he states that he is not so able at present.
He asks whether Tolhurst can be discharged free.
In view of the fact that Tolhurst has graduated at Dookie and that he will probably come into the farm later, and in view of the fact that as an A.H.G. in the R.A.A.F. there is no particular future for him, and that his training has been for farming, which promises a better future than as an A.H.G. in the R.A.A.F., I recommend his discharge.
I have informed Lt-Colonel Tolhurst that we will give the matter favourable consideration and suggest that O.C., N.1 A.D. be informed and requested to obtain a formal application for free discharge from Tolhurst.2
