Newspaper-Articles

  • 11 Jan 1894: BERWICK, WEDNESDAY.—There are two fatal accidents to record here since Sunday last. ... The second accident took place on Mr. Strettle's estate last night at about 9 o'clock. Edward Smith, son of Mr. A. Smith, bootmaker, while attending to horses in the paddock, was kicked by one of them on the right temple and rendered unconscious. He was found in the paddock about 20 minutes after he had last been seen alive, and immediately taken to Mr Strettle's residence. The local doctor, however, pronounced the case hopeless, and he died about an hour after the accident.4
  • 11 Jan 1894: BERWICK, Wednesday. Another fatal accident occurred here yesterday evening, when a lad named Edward Smith, 15 years of ago, in the employ of Mr. Stratford Strettle, of Gladys Park, Berwick, lost his life. He was sent out on a pony about 7 p.m. to run in some horses from a paddock adjoining Mr. Strettle's house, and, not returning when expected, a search was made. The poor lad was found lying unconscious with a large wound on the side of his head. Medical aid was sent for, but the lad died at 10 o'clock. It is believed he was thrown from his pony when rounding up the horses, and was kicked by one he was driving. Deceased's parents reside in High-street, Berwick. Abraham Stratford Strettle5

  • 8 Mar 1916: During the past fortnight Mr Wade, of Berwick, has been in communication with the railway authorities relative to a missing dog. When leaving a station in New South Wales a few weeks ago Mr Wade's son consigned two dogs, which he valued, to Berwick. One dog arrived here two days later than it should have done, and the other was missing. Information has been received that both dogs were started on their journey all right but there the departmental knowledge ends. There is a chance that the dog may yet be found, but Mr Wade does not anticipate that his enquiries will have any satisfactory result.18
  • 15 Mar 1916: LOCAL NEWS. In our last issue we referred to the fact that a dog sent to Mr Wade, of Berwick, by his son, from a station in New South Wales, was missing, Mr McDonald, our local S.M., has made every effort, to trace the dog, but without success. Last week a full description of the missing dog—a black and ran sheep-dog—was sent on to Albury, and two days later Mr Wade was asked to go to the Berwick station to claim his property. He went, and was surprised to find a blue and white cattle dog, and a very poor one at that. Thinking his dog might be hungry after his long trip, Mr Wade carried some meat with him. This he tossed to the dog that had been sent 200 miles for his inspection and, after making a very uncomplimentary remark on the situation, he left. That one or two who were present enjoyed the joke was evidenced by their Chaplin smile. Mr Wade is wondering what has gone wrong, as by no stretch of imagination could a blue and white cattle dog be classed as a black and tan sheep-dog.19

  • 20 Jan 1943: FLORA MAY CAHILL.
A DEVOUT adherent of Christ Church, Berwick, and a great church worker, Miss Flora May Cahill of “Chatsworth,” Berwick, died in the Berwick District Hospital on January 14, after an illness of some weeks. Born at Yea, deceased was the daughter of the late John and Lila Cahill, of Buckland (Tas.), where she resided for 20 years. She spent the greater part of her life in Victoria and had resided at Berwick for a number of years. Affectionately known to a wide circle of friends, she was a regular worshipper and a keen supporter of Christ Church. She was a valued member of both the Medical Missionary Auxiliary, and Ladies’ Guild, and her passing leaves a gap in their ranks that will be hard to fill. The funeral, which was private, took place on Friday afternoon, when her remains were cremated at the Spring Vale Crematorium. Rev. Ernest Panelli performed the last sad rites at the Crematorium Chapel.
    W. J. Garner and Son carried out the funeral arrangements.4
