  • 9 Jan 1946: Cr. J. J. Gardiner Of Berwick Passes On. LEADING CITIZEN WIDELY MOURNED
A PAST PRESIDENT of the Berwick Shire and a popular and valued member of the Berwick Council for many years, Cr. John James Gardiner, of Brisbane St., Berwick, passed away at the Dandenong Hospital last Sunday at the age of 75 years. The Berwick district is poorer for the passing of a sterling citizen who was always actuated by a high sense of public duty.
JOHN GARDINER hadn’t an enemy in the district, and his friends were legion. The reason was not hard to seek, for John, despite his 75 years, was young in spirit, loved sport and was never one to shirk responsibility when there was a job to be done or a helping hand to be lent. Kindly, straightforward and considerate in all things, he is going to be greatly missed from the life of Berwick.
The eldest son of the late James and Mary Gardiner, amongst the earliest residents of Berwick, deceased was a shire engineer in N.S.W. and Queensland for many years, but on his retirement he returned to make his home at Berwick about the year 1935. In June, 1937, he was elected to the Berwick Council in place of Cr. A. McKinnon and he remained a valued member of the council up till the time of his death, being elected shire president a few years ago. In New South Wales he was a J.P.
Deceased was a returned soldier of two wars, having fought in the Boer War and in the Great War of 1914-18. During the recent war he was a keen “air spotter.” Keenly interested in sport, particularly in cricket and football, he was president of both the Berwick F.C. and the Berwick Cricket Club, and was a loyal supporter of both. It was while attending the football grand final in Melbourne that he caught the chill which probably hastened the end. In him the Infant Welfare Movement had a strong supporter, and the Berwick Bush Fire Brigade, of which he was President found him a keen and active member. It was not so long ago that he and others set out to plant trees to beautify Berwick streets—typical of his public-spiritedness.
His untimely end was a great shock, particularly to his council colleagues, and almost every councillor attended the funeral at Berwick yesterday—the largest seen there for many a day. Requiem Mass was first celebrated by Fr. O’Sullivan at St. Michael’s, Berwick, after which the remains were interred in the family grave at the Berwick Cemetery.
The casket was covered by the Union Jack in honor of deceased’s war service, and the pall was carried by Crs. C. F. Greaves, A. G. Robinson, J. G.Dore, M. Bourke, J. Fallon, J. Richardson, T. Houlihan and J. C. Anderson, Mr. J. J. Ahern (Shire Secretary) and Mr. Claud Harris (Secretary Berwick R.S.L.)
The sympathy of all goes out to Mrs. Gardiner in the loss of a wonderful husband and help-mate, and to deceased’s brothers and sisters.
Rev. Fr. O’Sullivan offered up prayers at the graveside and Mr. C. Harris read the R.S.L. Service. Funeral arrangements were in the hands of W. J. Garnar and Son.10

There was not a spare parking spot in Brisbane Street as people turned out in their hundreds to watch one of Berwick’s most coveted homes sell at auction for a record $980,000. The sale made 70 Brisbane Street the most expensive house in the already booming suburb. Managing director of Barry Plant Doherty in Berwick, Paul Dabb, estimated more than 400 people turned up for the auction. There were five serious bidders - one over the phone from England and another from Brisbane. The property, Claremont, has 45 squares of living area and dates back to the late 1920s when it was built by Shire of Berwick engineer James Gardiner. It was bought by a Narre Warren East family, who were eagerly waiting to move in.11,12
