    District residents were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Mr. R. R. Stephenson, of Pakenham (formerly Pakenham South) on Sunday evening.
    Following a service at Pakenham Uniting Church at 10 a.m. to-morrow (Thursday), the funeral will proceed to Pakenham Cemetery.

  • 26 May 1982: LARGE FUNERAL A TRIBUTE TO R. R. STEPHENSON
    A very large gathering of friends and family filled the Pakenham Uniting Church on Thursday, 20th May to pay tribute to the late Mr. Richard Robert Stephenson, a man who contributed generously to his community over a long and useful lifetime.
    Mr. Stephenson lived for most of his 85 years at Pakenham South and during that time had a profound influence on the development of the area.
    He was always active in public affairs and served on practically every committee and organisation in the immediate area over his lifetime.
    SERVICE RECORD
    He was head steward of the Kooweerup North Methodist Church from 1920 to 1925.
    He was Chairman of the Pakenham South Hall
    committee for 21 years and Chairman of the Pakenham South Progress Association for 16 years then Vice President for another 10 years.
    ln 1947 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace.
    He was Chairman of the Pakenham South State School Committee for many years until the school closed and the Consolidated School opened in 1952.
    He was then appointed to the first Consolidated School Committee and served for a period of 15 years.
    He was a member of the Water Commission and belonged to the Mark Lodge of Pakenham and the Pakenham Masonic Lodge.
    He was an elder of the Pakenham South Presbyterian Church and the Pakenham Presbyterian Church.
    In later years he was a member of the Pakenham Senior Citizen Club.
    BORN LAST CENTURY
    Richard Stephenson was born at Pakenham on 30th April, 1897 to Samuel and Mary Stephenson. He was one of a family of 11 children, Arthur (dec.), Violet (Mrs. Turner dec.), Blanche (dec.), Grace (Cranbourne), Edith (Mrs. Petters, Queensland), Samuel (Pakenham), Frederick (Kooweerup), Irene (Mrs. Huntingford, Cranbourne), Harry (Glen Iris) and Reginald (dec.)
    Richard Stephenson attended school at Pakenham while living with his family in Bald Hill Road. In 1911 he moved onto a farm in Ballarto Road with his parents and brothers and sisters and worked on the family farm until 1925 when he purchased a 73 acre property in McDonalds Road, Pakenham South.
    In 1927 he married Edith Mary McCauley at the Methodist Church. Dandenong. In 1936 he added to his property by purchasing an adjoining 93 acres and named the farm Rosebank.
    NINE CHILDREN
    While living at "Rosebank" Richard and Mary Stephenson raised a family of nine children.
    In 1962 they purchased a 95 acre farm on the opposite side of the drain from "Rosebank" then later sold "Rosebank" and moved to the new farm where Mr. Stephenson lived until he retired from farming 3 1/2 years ago. His son Keith and daughter-in-law Lynn now live on the farm.
    On his retirement, Mr. Stephenson moved into Pakenham to live with his son Ron, daughter-in-law Yvonne and their family.
    He was living with them when he passed away suddenly on Sunday. May 16th.
    His wife pre-deceased him in 1975 after a long illness but he is survived by his nine children, Lorna (Mrs. Brooking, Pakenham), Shirley (Mrs. Dalton, Pakenham), Leslie (Warragul), Colin (Kyabram), Ronald (Pakenham), Beryl (Mrs. Hamilton, Beaconsfield Upper), Keith (Pakenham South), Neville (Pakenham South), Pearl (Mrs. Ferguson, Fumina South). 18 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.7

  • 8 Oct 1975: DEATH OF MRS E. M. STEPHENSON
    Mrs Edith Mary Stephenson, who passed away on October 3, was born at Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, almost 72 years ago and came to Australia with her parents and family in 1911. They took up land at Kyneton and afterwards came to Iona. In 1925 they bought a farm on the Nine Mile Road at Cora Lynn.
    Whilst living there she was prominently associated with the Presbyterian Church and Sunday School.
    In 1927 she married Mr R. R. Stephenson and after residing for many years on a dairy farm at South Pakenham they moved four years ago to a grazing property in the same area.
    A wonderful wife and mother, she won the high regard of all who knew her.
    She became ill 17 years ago and was on a walking stick ever since, but she retained a lively interest in all around her and in her Church, never missing a service on T.V.
    She became gravely ill ten days before her death and was admitted to Westernport Memorial Hospital, Kooweerup Hospital, Kooweerup, where she passed away on October 3, just one month before her 72nd birthday.
    The funeral took place at Pakenham Cemetery last Monday, following a service at Scots Church, where the service was conducted by Rev. T. Waters. The pall bearers were her five sons and one grandson.
    Mrs Stephenson is survived by her husband, five sons and four daughters, also her sister (Evelyn) and brother (James), and they have the sympathy of all in their sad loss.4

  • 13 Jan 1943: MRS. MARY STEPHENSON
    BORN at Pakenham and a resident of the district for all but three of her 79 years, Mrs. Mary Stephenson, of Bullarto road, Kooweerup North, was widely mourned when she passed away on January 10. Her health had not been very good for some months prior to her death.
    The late Mrs. Stephenson raised a large family and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of friends. Her passing came as a sorrowful blow to them all, and especially to her husband, 5 sons and 5 daughters.
    Five sons and one son-in-law carried the casket at the largely attended funeral on Monday, when the remains were laid to rest in the Pakenham cemetery. The pall-bearers were Cr. C. Wadsley, W. Peters, B. Turner, H. Ritchie, J. Shelton, Y. Wadsley, W. Ellett, B. Harvey, J. Savage and C. McGregor, Mr. John Scott read the burial service and W. J. Garnar and Son conducted the funeral.5

    Mrs. Phillips gave a splendid address on "Responsibility." She spoke of people shifting their responsibility on to others. For instance-in drunkard's homes, the lmshand will say " My wife drives me to the drink," and vice-versa. We read in the bible "Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging." Doctors say that wine strengthens. Who are we to believe: God or man ? How do people become drunkards ? By not follow ing the teachings of the bible. Mrs. Bowman sang "Christian Martyrs" very effectively. Mr. John Vale then spoke a few words and asked all present to become members of the W.C.T.U., and to wear the white bow. Another song was then given. '"The Better Land," by Mr. E. Brown, after which refreshments were handed round and brought to a close the best meeting of the union ever held in Fitzroy, seventy-four ladies being present.13
