    RUYTON is situated in the highest part of Kew, the healthiest suburb of Melbourne. The house was specially designed and built within the last year for the present principals. It contains more than 30 rooms, and is fitted with all modern conveniences and sanitary improvements. It stands in its own grounds, with tennis-court and large playground for the use of pupils. The principals are assisted by a resident French and German governess, an English governess, and visiting teachers of the highest standing. The scriptural instruction is in the charge of the Rev. Canon Vance, D.D. The ordinary course of instruction includes all subjects necessary for matriculation, pass or honours. Hitherto pupils from this school have been very successful at the University examinations. Musical instruction (for which a scholarship will be awarded annually) is in the hands of the best teachers in Melbourne. Drawing is taught by a well-known artist from Rome, and by a teacher with highest certificates from South Kensington.
    Special care and attention is paid to the health and comfort of the boarders by Mrs. E. H. Gubbins, who also superintends all household arrangement.
    Reference is permitted (amongst others) to the Right Reverend the Bishop of Melbourne and Mrs. Goe, the Right Reverend the Bishop of Ballarat and Mrs. Thornton, the Very Reverend the Dean, Sir William and Lady Clarke, Professor Irving, M.A., Mrs. W. Robertson, Lady Allen, Sydney, His Honour the Chief Justice of South Australia, Hon. Allan Campbell, M.D., M.L.C., Adelaide, George Clarke, Esq. East Talgai, Queensland.

  • 5 Jan 1891: DEATH OF MR. H. P. VENABLES. LONDON, JAN. 3. The death is announced of Mr. Henry Pares Venables, formerly secretary of the Education department of Victoria.11
  • 6 Jan 1891: The late Mr H P Venables, the announcement of whose death was published in The Argus of yesterday by cable message from our London correspondent was in former years connected with the Education department of the colony, as well as the Melbourne University. He was originally an inspector of schools for the Warrnambool district under the National Board and he was afterwards appointed an examiner under the Common Schools Board. When the new educational system came into vogue in 1872 he was appointed secretary of the department, and held the position until "Black Wednesday." He then severed his connection with the public service, and was shortly afterwards appointed as an examiner in English at the University. He also acted as librarian at the University, being succeeded in this office about a year ago by Mr E. H. Bromby.12
