Book*The Industrial Archaeology of Northern Ireland (By William Alan McCutcheon)
In the spade mill a billet of wrought iron, heated in the furnace, was beaten out to the size and shape required for the particular order in hand. The raw material for most Irish mills was obtained locally by melting down scrap metal or by importing billets of iron or mild steel through Londonderry, Newry or Cork. The manufacture of spades and shovels was carried on in workshops which in their development were mid-way between the village smithy and the early steel forge, with trip hammers, bellows, grindstones, shearing machines etc driven by water power but with an emphasis on individual craftsmanship reflecting the traditional skills of the medieval smith.
There were over forty water-driven spade mills in the six north-eastern counties, more than two-thirds of the Irish total, and of these eighteen were in County Tyrone, with a remarkable concentration of spade production around Coalisland, close to the head of canal navigation (fig 128). The average annual valuation of the water power used by Ulster spade mills in the 1830s was just over £7,64 indicating that they were in general fairly modest undertakings, but a description of spade production at Lecky's Mill, Coalisland, in 1843,65 underlines the essential difference between a relatively small number of larger commercial mills, producing a wide range of spade and shovel types for distribution over a substantial area around the centre of production (Coalisland, Newry, Derriaghy, Templepatrick, Clones) and the smaller, more isolated country mills, with a limited output and a restricted market catchment (Bushmills, Bruslee, Drumlegagh, Drumnakilly, Ballyronan, Aughrimderg, Gortmerron, Coagh, 'The Bush', Hollyhill, Fintona) (pis 61.3-62.4).
The spade mills of the north of Ireland were in general fairly short lived. The earliest were not established until the last quarter of the 18th century; the last maintains a precarious existence near Templepatrick in County Antrim [j 263856]. Built in response to a sudden increase in demand for hand tillage utensils, particularly spades, in the years of increasing population and agricultural expansion which preceded the Great Famine, most of them collapsed soon afterwards, leaving only the larger units in town and port to continue spade making as part of a widening background of general foundry engineering. They depended on the use of water power to drive their tilt hammers and ancillary machinery and in this they afford yet a further example of local watermills which incorporated the mechanical stamping device in industrial production.

  • 24 Apr 1897: In 1854 the first telegraph line in Australia was opened, between Williamstown and Melbourne. It was constructed and opened (in the presence of Governor Latrobe) by Mr. Samuel Walker McGowan, who was appointed first superintendent. Mr. McGowan was a native of Canada, but had served as a telegraph operator for some time in the United States, and, of course, he used and taught others the code with which he was most familiar.5
  • 14 Jun 1930: OUR FIRST TELEGRAPH LINE. TO THE EDITOR OF THE Argus
Sir,- In relation to the interesting article on our first Parliament last Saturday, the first telegraph line was erected by my father, the late Samuel Walker McGowan who brought telegraphy here from the United States. The Government bought him out in 1854, and made him superintendent of telegraphs. Finally he was made deputy postmaster-general, which position he held till his death in 1887. A surviving son and daughter are still living in Victoria. A great deal of interest-much of it romantic in character attaches to the establishment of many of the orginal telegraph lines, especially about Cape Otway, Wilson's Promontory and the Australian Alps

Newspaper-Articles

    Yours, &c.

  • 2 Feb 1937: LIFE OF SERVICE ENDED. Mrs Frank Walker.
The death of Mrs Frank Walker (Henrietta McGowan) which occurred yes terday at her home Wombolano Ring- wood after an illness of a fortnight ended a life of great usefulness.
Gifted with a capacity for self expression she wrote from her school days on subjects of interest to women - in the home in business and in the professions. For 17 years she was the senior woman writer of the Age and after her marriage to Mr Frank Walker she continued as a contributor to write on such subjects as craftwork for women and on careers which were open to handicapped men women or girls. She also demonstrated these crafts and taught them to those who applied to her for direction and aid.
During the last year of her life she entertained the Girl Guides at Wom- bolano and lent them land for camps. She also continued to take an active interest as a regular demonstrator in the craftwork of the Country Women's Association which through its efforts to make life easier for the woman in the country home won her enthusiastic sympathy. She was an original member of the Women Writers Club which was later merged with the Lyceum Club and she was an original member of the Arts and Crafts Society.
It was due to a suggestion by Mrs Walker then Henrietta McGowan that the first great women's exhibition was held in Melbourne in 1908. She conceived the idea of holding an interstate or an international exhibition of women's work an idea which was seized upon by Lady Northcote and produced remarkable results.
Mrs Walker was born at Balaclava and attended Fairelight, the well known girls school conducted in Alma road by Miss Chambers. Her parents were Mr and Mrs Samuel Walker McGowan. Mr McGowan like his daughter was a blazer of trails. He came from Canada and being a friend of Morse the deviser of the Morse code of telegraphy, he introduced this code into the Victorian Postal and Telegraph Office of which he became the official head as Postmaster-General. A stained glass window is placed to his memory in Holy Trinity Church Balaclava.4
