  • 16 Feb 1920: Mackenzie, Hector R. (1845–1920)
There died in Sydney at the end of last month an old colonist, Mr. Hector R. Mackenzie, aged 75 years. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. Farquhar Mackenzie, of Rossshire, Scotland, who came out to Australia in 1835. He was educated at the Melbourne Grammar School, and spent his early days in North Gippsland, Victoria, breeding cattle.
Later on, when his family was growing up, he had to extend his operations, and bought a property at Moree, N.S.W., where he stayed for eight years. Selling out, he bought a property in the Dalby district, Queensland, and after some years retired from active work, and spent the remaining years of his life at Roseville, a suburb of Sydney.
He was one of the best horsemen of his day, and was an unsurpassed bushman in every detail. He was of a reserved nature, but made good friends wherever he lived, and was universally loved. He leaves a family of five sons and three daughters, all the former being engaged in pastoral pursuits in the Roma district of Queensland.5

Newspaper-Articles

  • 10 Jan 1891: ARREST OF A BANK-TELLER. Charles E. Mackenzie, teller at the Hawthorn branch of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, was arrested on Tuesday morning on a warrant charging him with embezzling the sum of £107. The accused, who is about 27 years of age, and unmarried, has been for some years in the employment of the bank, and was regarded as a capable and trustworthy officer. Quite recently an unexpected examination of his cash disclosed the fact that it was short by about the amount mentioned on the warrant. Mackenzie at once admitted that he had taken the money, hoping in time to replace it, and said that his dishonesty had been prompted by financial difficulties. The defalcations, so far as is known, amount to £108 1s., and Mackenzie has assured the officers of the bank that they can not exceed £110. According to his statement he has been abstracting small sums from the money under his control for a period of about six months, avoiding discovery at the weekly examination of his cash by a system of post dating credits. Thus, supposing that he were £50 short on the day of the audit, he would make up the deficiency from the sums paid in on that day, omitting to credit the amount thus applied until the cash had been certified to as correct.4
  • 14 Jan 1891: Charles Edward M'Kenzie was charged before the Hawthorn Court this morning with embezzling L107, the property of the E. S. and A. C. Bank. Mackenzie, who was teller in the Hawthorn, branch was arrested last Tuesday, on information sworn by Mr. P. J. De Grut, inspector for the bank. The prisoner admitted the offence, which was altered to one of larceny, and was sentenced to three month's imprisonment.5
  • 17 Jan 1891: Charles E. Mackenzie, the teller at the Hawthorn branch of the English, Scottish, and Australian Chartered Bank, who was arrested last week for embezzling £107, was brought before the Hawthorn Bench on Tuesday. The charge was altered by consent to stealing by a servant, and the prisoner having pleaded guilty was let off with a sentence of three months' imprisonment. He was given a good character both by the bank officials and private individuals.6
