  • 23 Apr 1928: A large gathering of residents of the district met on Saturday night to bid farewell to Mr J M Reid and Mrs Reid, who are leaving the district to live with their son, Dr. Stanley Reid, at Korumburra. Mr. Reid has lived in this dis trict for nearly 10 years, making his home here on retiring from the Victorian public service. Though retired from active work in the service, he has continued his interest in many matters connected with tourist activities in the State, and his knowledge and experience have been of considerable benefit to the district. The farewell took the form of a social: -Mr. Reid was presented with a fine writing desk. Mrs. Reid was entertained by the Misses Corder at a croquet afternoon, and was presented with a bag from the members of the croquet club, of which she had been the president. Mr. Reid resigned as treasurer of the Congregational Church, and his place has been filled by Mr. A. Cornwell.

  • 15 Nov 1913: JOSEPH-BEVAN WEDDING
    The Rev. Paul Hamilton Morris Joseph, third son of Mr. Morris Joseph, of Carlton, Tasmania, who was ordained in the Hindmarsh Congregational Church, of which he is the pastor, was on Monday, November 10, married in the same church, to Miss Dorothy Leigh Bevan, youngest daughter of the Rev. Llewellyn D. Bevan, L.L.D., principal of Parkin College. The ceremony was performed by the father of the bride (Dr. Bevan), assisted by the Rev. Thomas Hope and the Rev. Willett Bevan (brother of the bride).
    The bride looked pretty and charming as she proceeded up the aisle on the arm of her brother (Rev. Willett Bevan). Miss Bevan, who was given away by her mother, was robed in a handsome gown of white silk with a train of beautiful white shot silk with silver Oriental, silk brought from Jerusalem by her parents some time ago. She wore a tulle veil and coronet of orange blos- soms, and cord, and a pretty shower bouquet of white and pink roses.
    The two bridesmaids in attendance were Miss Whiting and Miss Scammell, both of whom were gowned in pale pink crepe de chine, and pink and white hats. The bride's train was borne by two little boys—Master Medhurst Bevan (nephew of the bride), and Master Colin Robjohns.— They were both picturesquely attired in white poplin. Mrs. Bevan, mother of the bride, was gowned in black silk with' silver lace trimming over which was worn a lovely Brussells lace shawl. She wore a bonnet of white lace and feathers, and cord, and superb bouquet of azalias. The best man was Mr. Robert Baker, and the groomsman Mr. Rudolph Bronner. The church was exquisitely decorated by a number of young ladies of the church with white wistaria and white roses, and asparagus fern. From a floral arch of ferns and white roses was suspended a large white bell from which white festoons wore looped across the church to the memorial windows on either side. Two arches were also set up midway down the aisle, and formed of greenery and white roses, which added to the artistic effect. Miss M. G. Lawrence, church organist, played Mendelssohn's 'Wedding March' as the bride and bridegroom were leaving. The reception took place in the Congregational lecture hall, which was tastefully decorated, and the tables were nicely arranged with, good things, while the bridal party- occupied places on the platform. The usual toasts were honored.
    Amongst the guests were Mrs. Russell Hurditch (Victoria), sister of the bride, who was gowned in a pink sponge cloth coat and skirt and pink hat to match. Mrs. Willett Bevan (sister-in-law of the bride) wore a shantung coat and skirt, with dark blue hat and pink roses.

  • 27 Feb 1918: HINDMAKSH SQUARE CHURCH. Paul Joseph's Transactions.
    In the Supreme Court, before the Chief Justice (Sir George Murray), on Wednesday, the transactions between the Rev. Paul Hamilton Morris Joseph and the trustees of the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church were under investigation.
    The national Bank of Australasia claimed a declaration from the Court that by virtue of a deposit with the bank on February 20, 1910,
    and March 20 by Joseph of the certificates of title of certain lands and by letter of lien dated June 12, 1916, given to the bank by Joseph, the bank was entitled to priority to any claim by the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church (defendants) to an estate or interest on equitable mortgages, for securing advances made by the bank to Joseph and the interest therein. In the alternative the Bank claimed to be entitled to a charge on the net proceeds of the sale of the land after the payment out of the proceeds of all claims under liens validly registered against the land under the Workman's Lien Act of 1898. Among other reliefs sought by the bank was a claim that, if neeesary, Joseph should be ordered to execute to the bank a memorandum of mortgage to secure to the bank whatever was due.
    For the plaintiff bank Sir Josiah Symon, K.C. appeared with Mr. W. J. Isbister K.C., and Mr. R. N. Finlayson; for defendant Joseph, George McEwin; ami for defendant church, Mr A. W. Piper, with Mr. W. A. Norman. Mr. McEwin stated that Joseph was absent with the Australian military forces, but before going away he had appointed him (Mr. McEwin) to watch his interests, and do all in his power to settle the matter. In Joseph's behalf he would willingly accept any order of the Court.
    Mr. Isbister said the chief facts in the suit had been agreed to by the parties. Those facts disclosed that the Hindmarsh Square Church and lands were transferred to Joseph on February 1916, under an agreement with the trustees. Joseph had consented to act as pastor of the church ior 10 years. He was authorised to sell the property on his securing a fresh site for the building of a new church. On March 21 1916 he deposited the deeds with the bank as security for advances made to him. Joseph had two accounts with the bank. One was called a private account and the other ihe church account. On July 17, 1916. the accounts were overdrawn to the amount of £2,630 and £7,334 respectively. The claim was to decide whether the bank or the church (two innocent parties) had priority of claim wfth regard to the Hindmarsh Square Church property and the North terrace propcrty on which a new building had been started. The latter property had been sold without prejudice to the rights of the parties.7
  • 12 Aug 1918: THE REV. PAUL JOSEPH. Killed at the Front.
    Some time ago it was stated in "The Advertiser" that the Rev. Paul Joseph, formerly pastor of the Hindmarsh-square Congregational Church, had been reported missing at the front. The news has now been received that he was killed in France, where he was fighting as a private, on May 3. He was very popular with his soldier comrades, who speak of him as a brave and genial man, always ready to do valued acts of kindness. Mr. Joseph was born in Tasmania and he entered Parkin Training College in Adelaide nine years ago. He married a daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Bevan and he leaves a widow and one child.8
  • 13 Aug 1918: THE SUPREME SACRIFICE MADE BY REV. PAUL JOSEPH.
    The official intimation received by Mrs. Joseph, wife of Rev. Paul Joseph (formerly pastor of Hindmarsh Congregational Church) that her husband, who was reported missing previously, had been kiiled in action at the front, has been confirmed. The latest information states that Mr. Joseph made the supreme sacrifice on May 3. It was stated that Mr. Joseph, who was fighting in the ranks, was most popular with his comrades, whom he was always ready to help. He was spoken of as a brave and genial man.
    Mr. Joseph was born in Tasmania and entered Parkin Congregational College nine years ago. Afterwards he was ordained as minister of the Hindmarsh square Congregational Church. He marlied the adopted daughter of the late Dr. Bevan, and left a widow and two little sons. The family is at present with Mr. Joseph's relatives in Tasmania.9
  • 17 Aug 1918: Pte. the Rev. Paul Joseph.
    Official advice has been received that Pte. the Rev. Paul Joseph, formerly pastor of the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church, has been killed in action in France. He was reported missing on May 3. The late Pte. Joseph was born at Carlton, Tasmania, where his father was a leading layman. He came to Adelaide about nine years ago, and entered Parkin College. After four years in the institution he was appointed minister of the Hindmarsh Square Congregational Church. He subsequently relinquished the pastorate, and enlisted in August, 1916. The deceased soldier married a foster daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Bevan. A widow and one child survive.10

Paul Joseph, well known in connection with the North Terrace Temple project, that her husband, who was reported missinig previously, had been killed in action at the front, has been confirmed. The latest information that Mr. Joseph made the supreme sacrifice on May 3.11
  • 20 Mar 1919: THE CITY TEMPLE.
    The site of the City Temple, a valuable block on the corner of North-terrace and Tavistock-street, on which the late Rev. Paul Joseph began the erection of a modern church, has again changed owner skip. It is understood, however, that complications have arisen concerning the settlement.12
  • 12 Jun 1919: PAUL JOSEPH'S TEMPLE.
    In 1916 the Rev. Paul Joseph announced his intention of building a City Temple, which would be open night and day for the purposes of the people, and he selected as a site a valuable block of land on North terrace, opposite to the School of Mines. The visionary clerical, who met a man's death at the front subsequently, was unable to meet his financial obligations in the completion of the scheme, and for several years the land, with its partially constructed building, has been surrounded by a hoarding. Now it is to be converted to other purposes. Mr. J. H. Brown, one of our most enterprising citizens, who is a member of the firm of Messrs. Davis and Brown, has purchased the property, and it is his intention to utilize the position for the erection of a fine block of modern self-contained flats. He will not start his building operations, however, until the handsome pile under course of construction for Federal Palaces, Limited, is completed.13
  • 22 Oct 1919: THE LATE PAUL JOSEPH.
    A pathetic reminiscence in connection with the remarkable and unfortunate career of the Rev. Paul Joseph is related by Mr. H. L. Rayner, who is a South Australian Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, in a letter to his father, Rev. George Rayner, of Glenelg.
    Paul Joseph enlisted as a private, and made a really noble recovery after his actions, which will be recalled in connection with the project for building a City Temple on North Terrace, which to-day is still represented by the unfinished walls, and his purchase of the late Chief Justice's residence at Montefoire Hill. Paul Joseph, reports Mr. Rayner, was killed right alongside of Capt. Kelly, an old Prince Alfred Collegian. "He says he never saw a finer Christian than Joseph turned out, and he never saw a man die a finer death." The deceased soldier, who was not far in his thirties, married the adopted daughter of the late Dr. Bevan, principal of Parkin College, and the tragedy of his life is well-known.14
