  • 15 Jul 1931: The LATE MR. COHEN - The Scamander Tragedy Application for Probate MELBOURNE. July 12.
    The manner in which Mr. Morris Edwin Cohen, retired iron merchant, of Ormond Esplanade, Elwood, aged 65 years, met his death is shown in documents filed with the application which was made to-day for probate of his will. The application is made on the presumption that testator is dead.
    The executrix and the executor of the will, Mrs. Viva May Cohen and Mr. Arthur Phillips, solicitor, set out in an affidavit that to the best of their belief testator died on March 30, 1931. He left a will bearing date April 24, 1930. A joint affidavit by the widow, and by
    Valerie Frankel Cohen and Yvonne Frankel Cohen, two daughters, sets out that on March 27, 1931, they all accompanied testator to Tasmania on a holiday. They took up residence at the Scamander Hotel, Scamander, and on the morning of Monday, March 30, testator obtained a boat from the proprietors of the hotel, and took his two daughters for a row on the river, which ran into the sea. There was a bar at the mouth of the river. Testator rowed the boat down the river to the sea. The tide was running out, and there was a very swift current at the bar. On the return journey the daughters found that they could make no progress against the current, and testator took the oars. In the meantime the boat was carried over the bar, and realising the danger of being swept out to sea the daughters jumped out of the boat, and called to testator to follow them. He jumped from the bow, and simultaneously a wave broke over the boat, which by this time was being swiftly carried out to sea.
    The daughters struggled out of the water, but they did not again see their father. It had been reported to the deponents that human remains had been swept up from the sea recently, and that those remains would be the subject of an inquiry by the Coroner.
    An affidavit by Dr. Henry Shannon set out that testator had a bad heart. The sudden immersion and the mental disturbance would be sufficient to bring about heart failure and immediate death. Morris Edwin Cohen, Yvonne Frankel Cohen7

    At the Riddell Galleries the Misses Valerie and Yvonne Cohen are exhibiting a number of oils inspired by a recent visit to Dunk Island.
    There is a strong similarity in the work of the two sisters. Both are in love with strong, unmodulated colour, and neither has much feeling for sublety and nuance. As a consequence the Dunk Island here depicted is as brazen a terrain as that of melodrama. The pictures undoubtedly convey something of the luxuriant growth, the burning sunshine, the tropical urgency of their subject matter, but It Is difficult to believe that the island itself contains no more of beauty than the artists have captured. By and large. Yvonne Cohen's "Charlie" (No. 17), which is more subtle than the rest, and her sister's "Jungle Shadows" (No. 28), "Low Tide" (No. 34), and "Tenagra Leaves" (No. 37) seemed to me to be the pick of the lot.
    The exhibition will be opened at 3.30 p.m. to-day by Miss Gladys Moncrieff, and remain open until March 1. Yvonne Frankel Cohen10

    We all have an ideal way of life, which we hope one day will be ours. Mine has always been a tropical island, with long stretches of yellow sand, a sky unflecked by cloud . . . and pineapples, mangoes, and bananas within arm's reach-no gas stove, telephone, vacuum cleaners, none of the chores so integral a part of city life. Too idealistic altogether, my family says; such things no longer exist.
    But they do. Today I was visited by Yvonne Fraenkel-Cohen, who, with her sister, Valerie, has just returned to Melbourne from their island, Timana, off the Queensland coast. They own this island, and go there every year. They have been doing this ever since 1940-and this time they were there 7 1/2 months.
    Yvonne and Valerie are not just lotus eaters, and their island is not simply a refuge on which to laze. They are artists, and both are considered among the most promising of our younger painters. Charming to look at, the sisters form an interesting contrast. Yvonne, dark, with perfect features, and smooth hair: Valerie, slight, fair, petite, and blue-eyed.
    Life on Timana is ideal, but they have had to work hard. When they first went there everything was wild Now a shack has been built-one large livingroom and wide verandahs where one can sleep.
    Apart from their painting they spend their time in the garden. This year they had good carrots, tropical beans, papaws. pineapples, bananas.
    Pineapples for Troops .
    At this juncture Noel Wood, the South Australian artist, who lives on an island close by, came in. He told us how he had 5,000 pineapples, all of which ripened at the same time. But then Noel Wood grows great quantities of both fruit and vegetables, which are taken by, launch to Tully, the nearest port of call on the mainland, and from there are distributed to the troops.
    He shared for a time his island, which is called Bedarra, with Hugo Brassey, and at one time when the supply boat omitted to call they lived for six months on oysters, which they gathered, and coconuts.
    These gardening activities seem to have interfered but little with the painting of these artists. The two Fraenkel-Cohens, Noel Wood, and Charles Martin will hold an exhibition early in February at Georges' gallery.
    Yvonne said painting in the tropics was not as ideal as it might appear; for while their island was on the whole fairly free from insect pests, there were times when mosquitoes, sand flies, and particularly march flies, descended on them in hordes. This year had been particularly bad, and the reason, they were told, was the windstorms which had swept up from New South Wales.
    One of the most important questions that I almost forgot to ask her was what they wore in those parts. "Sarongs," she said, "and play suits or shorts." Nice, I thought, for the beach, but not so good during an insect plague. Yvonne Frankel Cohen11

Note* Yvonne Frenkel Cohen was born in Melbourne in 1914 and spent the majority of her life as a dedicated painter, alongside her sister Valerie Albiston. Their father, Morris Cohen had a close association with one of the Heidelberg artists David Davies, and the sisters frequently accompanied their father on weekend painting trips.
After extensive travel throughout Europe, studying the works of emerging painters of the day, the sisters returned to Australia in 1935 and enrolled in the National Gallery School under the tuition of W. B. McInnes. This was followed by tuition with Louis McCubbin, six months at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology under Murray Griffin and a brief period with John Rowell.
In a plan to escape the cold winter of Melbourne in 1938, Cohen and Albiston travelled North to the tropics, ultimately settling in the Dunk and Timana island region where they concentrated their efforts on painting the wild beauty of the tropical island landscape. For the next 40 years the sisters divided their time between Melbourne and the tropics, developing their reputation as early pioneers of the Modernist Australian painting movement, inspired by the Northern landscape.
Yvonne Cohen studied at RMIT, George Bell School, c 1950. The daughter of Morris Cohen and sister of Valerie Albiston, she painted mainly semi-abstract landscapes. Her work appeared in exhibitions with Jim Alexander Gallery; Charles Nodrum; Eastgate Gallery and in Classical Modernism: The George Bell Circle, National Gallery of Victoria 1992.5

I remember your writing some time ago asking permission for a road through my land, and think some sort of permission was made, but I also think that I went up to the Lands Dept to arrange this, to enquire whether they would reduce my land payments by the area of road which I was giving up. It is about 1 3/4 acres.
I also heard that you had abandoned the idea for making the road, however if you still intend making it I think there is no objection, although I should prefer you getting the adjoining owner to go half as the value of land has increased so much. I also forwarded Mr Graham some time ago a statement of charge for your portion of fencing, 3.11.0. Please see that fence is put up now.

  • 7 Dec 1882: THE RAILWAY BILL.
    The Railway Construction Bill was further considered in committee. On the proposed Beaconsfield railway, evidence was taken as under : —
    Mr. W. William Brisbane, sawmill proprietor, of Beaconsfield, stated that there would be no difficulty in carrying a line from Beaconsfield station to Beaconsfield. During the year ending October, 1882, about 14,000 persons travelled between Beaconsfield station and Melbourne. A line could be continued from the station to Gembrook.
    He knew of one house built in the locality that cost £6000, and he believed there was some talk of the Government renting it as a country seat for the Governor. Special rolling-stock of a light cheap character would be required for the line. The projected line went into the centre of population, and would pay. It was publicly alleged that the allotments in the district were owned by members of Parliament, but he only know of two cases in which that assertion was true. The company, of which he (Mr. Brisbane) was the manager, was now constructing a wooden tramway, 6 miles in length, which he estimated would not cost more than £700 altogether. He would not, however, recommend the State to have anything to do with wooden tramways.
    Mr. CAMPBELL, at this stage, mentioned that he had drawn up a resolutiun in favor of appointing a committee to inquire as to the relative wants of tramways and railways, for the special requirements of Beaconsfield, Drouin, Poowong, Warragul, Neerim, Moe and Narracan. The CHAIRMAN, however, ruled that the motion could only be made in the House.
    Mr. Geo. B. Halford, professor at the Melbourne University, said that he was the oldest resident at Beaconsfield. If there were railway communication to that place it would soon be transformed into a second Richmond, near London : and instead of 14,000 passengers a year there would be 40,000. It was also a most health- giving neighborhood.
    Mr. Char. D'Ebro, civil engineer, said that he had gone over the route of the proposed railway. The only way to get there was by some system of sharp curves, but not as the Government proposed, for they might just as well to try to run up the side of a house. The steepest gradient on the line could be brought down to was 1 in 50.

  • 6 Apr 1889: THE PRAHRAN MARKET. PRIZE DESIGNS. FIRST PREMIUM AWARDED TO MR CHAS A D'EBRO.
    In response to the Prahran council's invitation to architects to submit competitive designs for shops, dwellings, and improve ments of the present market accommodation in Commercial-road, a number of designs have been received, and were considered last Friday evening at a special council meeting, when Mr. Chas. A. D'Ebro was awarded first prize and Mr Michael Egan second prize.20
  • 14 Feb 1891: The marriage of Miss Blanche Tracey, youngest daughter of the late Mr, Richard T. Tracey, M.D., of Melbourne, with Mr. Charles A. D'Ebro, A.M.I.C. E., of Lansell road, Toorak, was celebrated at Holy Trinity Church, Balaclava, a short time ago. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dr. Torrance, assisted by the Rev. F. J. Price.     At the recent competition held under the auspices of the Minister of Water Supply, in which there were 78 competitors, the prize of £100 was awarded to Mr. Chas. A. D'Ebro, Assoc. M.I.C.E., of Melbourne. The instrument will take the place of many other arrangements which have hitherto failed from their unreliability, under fluctuations of head, and mechanical joints which stick fast when not used continually.
    The module consists of a cylindrical vessel, A, of sheet steel or other metal, having three floats, B, and three weirs or notches, G, connected to a box, K, by means of an expansion joint, F, formed of rings of flexible material, which are joined at their edges, thus forming a watertight trunk capable of expansion or contraction. This is connected at the top to the underside of the floating vessel, and at the bottom to the wooden trunk. This trunk is laid in the bottom of the inlet channel, and has a water-tight dam with gate, J, across the channel, which when shut completely closes the passage of the water.
    The module is first adjusted to a proper level by means of three sliding weights, D, and the quantity of water which it is determined on to supply is regulated by the depth to which the weirs are sunk below the water level by the weights, EE. It will be seen that almost any variation in quantity can be adjusted by this means, and any variation in the level of the water in the inlet channel will be allowed for, as the vessel will float at the determined level, there being the same connection through the bellows trunk with no appreciable friction. The whole of the instrument will be enclosed in a rough casing with hinged cover, and a dam and inlet-gate, to be used in case of repairs.22

    Charles Debro, 70, an architect and engineer of Melbourne, was found dead yesterday in a bathroom at the Weld Club with his throat cut. Mr Debro was visiting Perth as adviser to the Government regarding Fremantle freezing works.24
  • 29 Jun 1920: MR. D'EBRO'S DEATH. PERTH, Monday
    At the inquest to-day concerning the death on June 23 of Mr. Charles D'Ebro, the Melbourne architect, who committed suicide in a bathroom in the Weld Club, the jury returned a verdict of suicide while temporarily mentally depressed. The evidence showed that Mr D'Ebro had been low spirited, and had complained of sleeplessness. He remarked to a fellow-passenger on the Zealandia when coming from Melbourne that life was not worth living, and he had been advised; by a medical man whom he consulted in Perth not to work too hard.25
  • 3 Jul 1920: Mr. Charles A. D'Ebro, whose death under tragic circumstances was reported in 'The Chronicle' last week; to have taken place in a bathroom at the Weld Club, Perth, on the previous day, was the Melbourne architect whose design was accepted by the Adelaide Metropolitan Abattoirs Board for its extensive works, opened in 1913 at Dry Creek. Mr. D'Ebro was also engaged by the board as the architect for the construction of the Abattoirs. He was a member of the firm of Meldrum, D'Ebro, & McKenzie, of Melbourne, and was one of the best-known members of his profession in Australia. Many years ago in partnership with the late Mr. J. H. Grainger (a well-known South Aus tralian and father of Mr. Percy Grainger) he built Prince's Bridge, Melbourne, and he was connected with other important buildings in Melbourne. Mr. D'Ebro passed through Adelaide a few days ago on his way to Perth, and appeared to be in good health. His visit was as adviser to the Western Australian Government in connection with the erection of freezing works at Fremantle. He was about 68 years of age.26
  • 8 Nov 1920: Probate is being sought in the estate of the late Mr. Charles Abraham D'Ebro, of Queen street, Melbourne, architect and civil engineer. Mr. D'Ebro, who died on June 23, left by his will of October 12, 1917, personal property valued at £13,845, the income for which is bequeathed to his widow and daughter, and the daughter's heirs or assigns, subject to certain provisions. A bequest of £2,000 is made, subject to the trusts of the will, to the Women's Hospital for the endowment of a bed to be called "The Blanche Tracy D'Ebro Bed," after testator's widow. After these provisions have been met, the residue is devised to the University of Melbourne for the founding of one or more scholarships in engineering, to be known its "The D'Ebro Scholarship" or scholarships.27

  • 4 Dec 1930: James Smithenbecker met with a fatal accident at Urangedine last week while assisting with the harvesting on Mr. J. P. Clancy's farm. He was driving the binder when the knife getting stuck he got off the machine, to release it. The horses moved and he was caught on the legs by the knife and so badly injured that he died.13
  • 16 Dec 1952: Mr. Joseph Peter Clancy, a highly esteemed former resident of the Urangeline-Pleasant Hills district, died at his home at 54 Glass Street, Essendon, on Dec. 8.
    Mr. Clancy, who had been in ill-health since his retirement to Melbourne in 1949, collapsed at his home and died while preparing to go to bed for the night. Mr. Clancy was born at Pleasant Hills in 1891. He was the second son of the late Daniel and Margaret Clancy, one of the earliest pioneer families in the Pleasant Hills-Urangeline area. Mr. Clancy and his brothers farmed 'Arranmore' estate after their father's death.
    They encountered the hardships of early farming which today evoke constant amazement. In 1918 Mr. Clancy married Catherine Smithenbecker, an Albury nurse, and settled at 'Glenmore' a few miles from the old Clancy homestead. In the ensuing years Mr. Clancy was prominently, associated with local farmers' progress associations and Catholic Church activities. Mr. Clancy retained a lively interest in Lockhart-Urangeline district affairs until his death. He constantly expressed a wish to revisit the area but his health prevented it.
    Mr. Clancy was buried on December 10. A large funeral procession left St. Vincent De Paul's Church, North Essendon, for the Keilor cemetery. The casket was carried by his sons, Pat and James, his nephews Brian Clancy (Urangeline East) and Stan Clancy (Albury), and Messrs. R. Clear and R. Ellis (Melbourne). Mr. Clancy is survived by his widow, four sons, John (Essendon), Jim and Pat (Beaconsfield) and Geoff (Surrey Hills), four grandchildren, Barbara, Peter, John and Kelly. Also by a sister, Mrs. J. Leddin (Urangeline East) and a brother, Mr. D. Clancy (Albury).14

    Giving judgment in the High Court yesterday in an action for compensation against the Australian Apple and Pear Board, Mr Justice McTiernan fixed the basis for the computing of compensation as follows:
    (1) Taking the total quantity, expressed in bushel cases, of the apples and pears covered by the relevant order grown in Victoria of the particular grade and variety acquired by the Commonwealth; (2) ascertaining the total net proceeds obtained by the board from sale and disposal of so many of such apples and pears as were delivered by growers in Victoria to the board, and sold or disposed of by the board; (3) dividing the total of such net proceeds by the total quantity expressed in bushel cases; and (4) treating the quotient as the value per bushel of apples and pears of that grade and variety covered by the order and applying it accordingly to the number of bushel cases acquired from the partnership.
    His Honour declared that compensation for fruit acquired under the orders was the aggregate of amounts ascertained in pursuance of the foregoing declaration. The action was adjourned for further consideration.
    The action had been brought against the board and the Commonwealth by Edwin Inglis Lawford and Edward Hermann Zerbe, partners in the growing and selling of apples and pears. The fruit was grown at Doncaster and Croydon, in Victoria, and was acquired from the partnership in 1940, 1941, and 1942. Lawford died in May, 1944, and Zerbe became entitled by law to the assets of the partnership. Edward Hermann Zerbe10
