  • 5 Sep 1918: A grand patriotic gymkhana is to be held at the Dandenong Showgrounds on Wednesday, 11th inst. in aid of the Dandenong Red Cross Prisoners of War and Purple Cross. Many parents are taking advantage of the school holidays now on, and are forming motor parties, taking their hampers with them. The grounds are most favourable for this and the motor cars can bo drawn up, and the events watched from the cars. Another attraction of the afternoon will be the attendance of a representative of the Amalgamated Pictures, who will be there to take a moving picture of the grounds and the events that take place, and this picture will be shown in the city the following week. Further particulars may be had on application to Miss Montgomery, Malvern.9
  • 2 Sep 1940: MONTGOMERY.— On September 1. at her home, 10 Denham-place, Toorak, Marion Isabel, beloved sister of L. E. Lort-Smith and Margaret Montgomery.10
  • 18 Jul 1945: MISS MARGARET MONTGOMERY, of Denham Place, Toorak, who died yesterday aged 80, was one of a family of 11 children of Mr William Montgomery who settled on The Heart Station, Sale, in 1841. Mrs Lort Smith, of Toorak, founder of the Animal Welfare League, is the last remaining member of the family. The funeral at Springvale today was private.11

  • 14 Apr 1888: LAW COURTS. An action for breach of promise has been commenced by Harriet Tabitha Hackett, spinster, of Burnley, against Gilbert Charles Hogg, first officer of the Carlisle Castle. An application was on the 6th inst. made to and granted by Mr. Justice A'Beckett for the issue of a writ of caputs against the defendant, consequent on the belief of the plaintiff that he was about to sail immediately for London. The plaintiff made an affidavit to the effect that she was seduced by the defendant in July, 1885, under a promise to marry her, and on several other occasions down to December of the same year. The result was the birth of a child, which the plaintiff had maintained without any assistance from the defendant. She had sustained at least £1000 damages, and was desirous that the plaintiff should not leave the colony, so that there might be an opportunity of having him examined before a jury as to the allegations made by her and denied by him. The defendant was arrested, and having failed to find security for £100, the amount endorsed on the writ, or bail, was comitted to prison, and application was now made for his release. On the 10th inst. affidavits were read to the court to the effect that over three weeks ago he had informed the captain of his intention to sign off the articles in order, that he might be in the colony to defend the action which he regarded as an attempt to extort money. He admitted having been intimate with the plaintiff, but not that he ever made any promise to marry her. The captain consented to give him his discharge so soon as he could find a mate to take the ship to London, but he failed to got a substitute until Thursday last. On the 6th inst. Hogg left his vessel, and he was arrested a few hours afterwards. His Honor said it did not appear that the defendant had any intention to leave the colony, and therefore made an order for his discharge upon his paying £3 3s. costs to the plaintiff.10
  • 2 Jun 1888: The breach of promise case of Hackett v. Hogg has been settled. Harriet Tabitba Hackett, spinster, of Burnley, brought an action for £1000 damages against Gilbert Charles Hogg, mate of the ship Carlisle Castle, alleging that he had seduced her under promise of marriage. Mr. Justice a'Beckett was on Thursday informed that both parties had arranged for the withdrawal of the suit.11

  • 15 Apr 1893: A VERY HARD CASE. William Noot, aged 72 years, appeared in answer to a charge of vagrancy. Constable Young stated that the poor old man some time back had been turned adrift by his son who was a draper carrying on business in High street, Malvern.
    The old man had since been wandering about the streets sleeping in sheds and outhouses at night. On the morning of the 8th, he found the old man outside his son's shop and was requested to remove him "as a nuisance." The son, J. F. Noot, informed the bench that his father had been a burden to him ever since 1886. He had got him several situations but he never kept them any length of time. In answer to a question from the bench witness said his father had no means of support and he wished him to be sent to gaol. Mr O'Meara, the P.M., said he hoped there would soon be a law passed to compel people like Noot to support their aged parents. In answer to accused Noot said he had refused to grant his request for a piece of bread, but refused to reply as to whether or no he had called him a "dirty old vagabond." The poor old man said he had not broken his fast since noon on Friday. At this stage Mr Forlonge as amicus curiae, mentioned that he was informed by the solicitors at the table that Noot junr., when sued for illegal detention of certain articles claimed by his father on a previous court day did not deny having received the last £8 earned by the poor old man. The bench expressed their regret at not having the power to compel the son to support the father, and sent the latter to the Geelong gaol for three months. The spectators in court made an open manifestation of their sympathy with the old man and their utter disgust at the inhumanity of his son.11
