William Hyland, Settler, residing at Western Port.
The deceased and myself went from Mrs O'Shea's station on Saturday last on horseback to look for a mare that had strayed. We started at about eleven o'clock and about four or half past in the afternoon we were near Mr Wedge's paddock, when as we were cantering, the horse of deceased stumbled and he fell, the horse rolling on him. I went immediately to him, and after breathing once or twice he expired. When I came to him I found him lying on his left side with his head bent under his left arm, he bled from the mouth and nose and one of the ears. I saw him fall very heavily on his head from the horse, and the ground was very hard where he fell. I then ... in carrying the body to the station of Mr Wedge, and had the fact communicated to Mrs O'Shea. The body was brought into Melbourne this following Monday morning - And the coroner immediately made acquainted with the fact. Deceased was perfectly sober at the time.

  • 23 Sep 1891: The grim hand of Death has been busy of late amidst our little community, and the wailing of bereaved ones is to be heard in divers places. 'Tis sorry comfort, and hard to realise the truth of the words that it is "all for the best." Doubly hard is the trial when the mainstay of the family is taken to "that land from whose bourne no traveller e 'er returns." However, sic transit gloria mundi, and those who remain can at most enjoy but a brief sojourn till they "cast anchor beyond the vale."
Many of our readers will learn with regret of the death of Mrs. T. J. Rossiter avery old resident of the County of Mornington, having arrived there in 1847. She then resided with her father at Gladys Park Station, near Berwick. She was married on the 1st September, 1854, and still remained in that district until the year 1881, when she left with her family for Spring Grove, near Cunnamulla, Queensland, where she died. We clip the following from the Cunnamulla Argus, of Tuesday, 1st September, 1891:—"We deeply regret having to record the death of Mrs. Rossiter, wife of Mr. T. J. Rossiter, of Spring Grove. The deceased lady had been ill scarcely a fortnight, and up to the night of her death no one, not even Dr. Murray, who had visited her the day previous, anticipated the fatal result. The cause of death was congestion of the liver, probably
accelerated, by an attack of syncope.
Mrs Rossiter was very highly esteemed by all who knew her, and in the home circle her loss must be keenly felt. The funeral took place on Saturday, when nearly all the residents of the town attended the businses places closing as the procession moved through the streets.
In the absence of a clergyman, the police magistrate conducted the burial service. A rather sad circumstance attending this visitation was the fact that Mr. Rossiter was absent from home on a visit to Melbourne." We are sure Mr. Rossiter's many friends in this district will join with us in an expression of sympathy for his bereavement.5

  • 4 Jan 1908: DEATH OF Mr. T. J. ROSSITER.
It is with much regret that we have to record the death of Mr. Thomas James Rossiter, which sad event took place at his residence (Edward-street) early on Monday morning last, at the age of 76 years. About March of last year he was stricken down with a paralytic stroke, which practically rendered him an invalid.
He remained in that condition right up to the time of his demise. He was a native of Somersetshire, England, and came to Victoria in 1841 with his father the late Mr. Benjamin Rossiter, who took up a cattle station on the Yarra River, and remained there several years, which he eventually sold, and bought Ravenhurst Station in Western Port, which afterwards passed into the hands of his sons, Messrs C. and T. J. Rossiter, who resided there for many years. They went in extensively for breeding draught horses and Shorthorn cattle, having purchased the imported Clydesdale stallion 'Reformer' for 800 guineas at auction in Melbourne. Mr. Rossiter sold his Victorian property in 1879, and came to N.S.W., having bought Warkoo Station in the Cobar district. This he sold stocked in 1884, and and then went to Queensland, where he bought Spring Grove Station on the Warrego River.
Here he lived many years, and his wife died in Queensland in 1891. He afterwards came to Molong, where he has lived for the past 10 years. Mr. Rossiter leaves a family of four sons and three daughters to mourn their great loss. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon last, his remains being interred in the local cemetery, the Rev. Canon Alldis officiating at the graveside.7
