  • 21 Dec 1911: Wine Licence Granted for Emerald
    At the Dandenong Licensing Court on Thursday, Mrs. Greatorex applied for an Australian wine licence for premises situated at Emerald, on the Gembrook railway line.
    Mr. Brayshay appeared in support of the application which was opposed by Messrs. W.P. Newton and McKean (on behalf of residents) and Inspector Keane (for the police), Mr. Brayshay referring to his opponents as the happy trinity.
    Mrs. Greatorex gave evidence in support of her case, as also did Charles Cook.
    Percy Sheritt spoke in corroboration.
    Mr. Newton—What do you do for a tid now!—I am almost a teetotaller.
    G. W. Simmons, farmer, supported the application.
    Mr. Newton—What would be sold at this saloon:—The best brands of wine would sell best.
    Ah, yes, Pomeroy and Dry Monopole. I suppose at 6d. a glass. Would you expect a pint or a long 'un for your money?—I drink wine sometimes, if I feel the want of it, but I can do without it.
    D. Legg, sawmiller and contractor, said it was a daily occurrence at Emerald to hear demands for wine.
    Objections to the granting of the licence were raised by W.B. Jones and W. Bolger, who both presented petitions.
    The Bench granted the application.10
