  • 12 Jul 1948: Australian Disappears
SINGAPORE, Mon (AAP-Reuter): The mystery surrounding the disappearance of Australian rubber planter John R. Rutty, of Sydney, is deepening. Rutty has not been seen since Friday when he was driving in a car near Kuantan. The bodies of a European and two Asiatics, who were with him in the car, have been found. Terrorists may be holding him as a hostage.4
  • 9 Aug 1948: Mrs. J. R. Rutty, with baby daughter Judith, back in Australia as refugees from Malaya, where a few weeks ago Communist gangsters ambushed and shot to death her 33 year-old husband, a rubber planter. She warns Australia to realise the menace of the Communists before it is too late.5
  • 16 Sep 1948: IN MALAYA SINGAPORE, Sept. 15. A.A.P.-Reuter.-An Australian tin miner, William Archer, was murdered this morning in Selangor State, not far from where 150 terrorists murdered a rubber planter, George Wilson, on Saturday.
Archer was the 15th white man, and third Australian to fall victim of the Malayan terrorists. The other Australians were Mr. J. R. Rutty, missing, believed killed, following an ambush near Kuantan, Pahang, on July 9, and Mr. B. P. Wills, who was murdered near the Tronoh mines, 20 miles from lpoh, on August 28. Archer's body, riddled with bullets, was found lying by a water trench, 10ft. from his burned car. A witness said it looked as though thee terrorists had hidden in the water trench and killed Archer with a burst of fire from Stenguns. Archer was driving unescorted, from his house to the mine, through a lonely valley, when he was ambushed. The terrorists took his carbine ind pistol before burning the car. Police later arrested four suspects in the dredge area adjoining the spot where Archer was murdered. The search for others is being continued. First warning of the tragedy came when the timekeeper in a dredge, half a mile away, heard gunfire. An Australian mining engineer on the spot, said; "l wonder what Mr. Chifley will have to say about this." - Archer regularly made the journey to the dredge twice daily. Mrs. Archer and her two small children left Malaya by air about a month ago to return to her home in Melbourne.
Bandit Captured A military patrol yesterday wounded and captured an important Communist leader, Chen Tsung Chuan, in the Taiping area. The patrol was proceeding to attack a well-known bandito camp in the jungle area around Taiping when it clashed, with 15 armed bandits. The leader of the bandits and four others were hit. The bandits withdrew, taking their wounded. Later the patrol found the wounded bandit chief, left under a tree, covered with a blanket, with a box of medicine beside him.
Chinese Hanged Four. Chinese terrorists were to day hanged in Pudu Gaol, Kuala Lumpur. Two more Chinese murders and the death of one Malay constable were reported in a police com munique issued to-day. The bodies of a Chinese labourer and foreman were found near Ko tatinggi (Johore). The foreman had four bullets in his body, and the head, which had been hacked off with an axe, was lying three yards from the body. Police arrested all 23 Chinese members of a nearby dwelling house. Following a terrorist attack early to-day on the Sungei Tiramn estate, in Johore, a Malay special constable was found dead among the rubber trees, shot through the back. The attack was beaten off. Terrorists last night unsuccess fully tried to wreck the night mail train from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore between Layang Layaijg and Sedenak, in Johore 5 - A pilot, engine, pushing a weighted bogie truck known as a "crash waggon." and drawing an arriour ed car. detonated a mine as the first wheels of the waggon went over a small bridge. The crash waggon was derailed and two lengths of rail were blown up but nobody was injured. The mail train is safe, under heavy guard, at Layang Layang station.6
