    A 55-YEAR-OLD woman, paralysed from the neck down, was flown from Sydney to Melbourne yesterday to be near her family.
    The woman, Mrs. V. Lunt, of Station-st., Narre Warren, mother of eight children, was transferred to the Alfred Hospital.
    She was paralysed after a car accident at Yass early in January.
    With her husband, a poultry farmer, she had been returning to Melbourne after a holiday in
    Sydney. Their car overturned near Yass, and Mrs. Lunt was trapped underneath.
    Four seats were removed from a T.A.A. plane to accommodate a special bed in the DC4 which brought Mrs. Lunt to Melbourne
    yesterday.
    An ambulance, which had waited for the plane
    took Mrs. Lunt to the hospital.
    Mrs. Lunt's niece, Mrs. P. Hannah, of High-st. St. Kilda, said last night that Mr. Lunt had spent his life-savings on specialists’ treatment for his wife.
    “He may have to mortgage their house to get money for further treatment.” she said.
    Narre Warren residents were organising two dances to help pay the fees.9
  • 14 Apr 1954: Mrs. Lunt Flown To Melbourne
    MRS. V. LUNT, of Station St., Narre Warren, was flown from Sydney to Melbourne recently to be near her family.
    Paralysed from the neck down, this 55-year-old mother of eight is new in the Alfred Hospital.
    She received her injuries after a car accident at Yass early in January. With her husband, a poultry farmer, she had been returning to Melbourne after a holiday in Sydney. The car overturned near Yass, and Mrs. Lunt was trapped underneath.
    Mr. Lunt has spent his life savings on specialist treatments for his wife, and it is to help him meet heavy medical expenses that the Hallam Younger Set has launched an appeal.10
  • 14 Apr 1954: Seventh Day Adventists Help Lunt Appeal
    AT THE Church service of the Dandenong Seventh Day Church recently a special offering was made to assist Mr. Lunt, of Narre Warren, to meet the huge expense he has to meet as a result of a motor accident in which he and his wife were involved. Mrs. Lunt is still suffering in the Alfred Hospital, and in a low condition. The sum of £40 was donated.11
  • 21 Apr 1954: Narre Warren’s Wonderful Response £117 FOR LUNT APPEAL; £42 FOR DEAF KIDDIES
    There’s nothing wrong with the community spirit up at Narre Warren. Last week a concert there realised £42 for the School for Deaf Children, and on Wednesday night a dance to help the Lunt family in their misfortune, realised the magnificent sum of £117/8/-.
    SATURDAY, APRIL 10th was a very satisfactory night for the promotors of the concert for the School for Deaf Children. It must have been very pleasing, too, for the Narre Warren Progress Association, which generously vacated the night and dropped its monthly dance to make way, for such a deserving cause. Members will be delighted to know that the kiddies benefited by over £40.

    ALTHOUGH the weather was most unkind that did not prevent the Benefit Ball for the Lunt Family last Wednesday night from being a bumper night. All amounts are not in yet but already £117/8/- is in hand as a result of the function.

  • 22 Dec 1954: NARRE WARREN MAN DIES AT WHEEL OF CAR Further Misfortune for the Lunt Family
    Last Wednesday morning, just as he was pulling into the Narre Warren Garage for petrol, Mr. Joseph Henry (Harry) Lunt, of Webb St., Narre Warren, collapsed at the wheel of his car and died.
    The garageman, noticing the erratic behaviour of the car, quickly jumped onto it and pulled it up but Mr. Lunt was then beyond aid.
    News of his tragically sudden death was received with wide spread regret throughout the district, especially as the Lunt family have had more than their share of misfortune of late.
    Mrs. Lunt, who was injured in a motoring accident many months ago, is still lying paralyzed in Heidelberg Hospital.
    News of her husband’s tragic end was a sad blow indeed to her and her large family—Pauline, Emily, Patricia, Herbert, Audrey, Diana, Doreen and Merle.
    The late Mr. Lunt, who was an old Imperial Army soldier, was 56. He had had a very worrying time since his wife’s illness and an extra strain was thrown on him.
    The whole district feels for the sorrowing family in this latest blow and there was a big crowd at the funeral on December 17th, when the remains were interred in the Spring Vale Cemetery. There was a wealth of beautiful floral tributes, too. Pastor Streeter took the service and the pall-bearers were P. Robson, C. Forsyth, D. Grey, T. Nippress, J. Nippress, H. Keys, F. Sweeney and G. Graeme.
    A Memorial Service to the late Harry Lunt will be conducted by the Seventh Day Adventists in the Soldiers Memorial Hall, Dandenong, on Saturday morning next, at 11 a.m.

    TO THE EDITOR OP THE ARGUS.
    Sir,-Permit me space for a few observations on J. Dunkinson's letter in to-day's issue.
    There no doubt was an arrangement between a former committee of the Richmond Cricket Club and Dunkinson to take care of the ground; but no one knows better than Dunkinson himself, who was then a member of the club, that the payment to him depended very much, if not altogether, on subscriptions being received, and that the members of the club were never considered or expected to be liable beyond their subscriptions. The club was not prosperous, and there was a small balance which the club had no funds to meet.
    That the amount was only £14 the club has conclusive proof, in writing furnished by Dunkinson himself.
    Now as to the hardship. According to Dunkinson's own showing, he has been in possession of the pavilion, where he and his family now reside, for upwards of twelve months, rent free, and without doing anything to the ground. I know that for many months he has had a large number of sheep grazing on the ground. Now, the property is rated at £30 per year by the City Council, so it would be a very low estimate to put it as worth 10s. a week, which I think must be admitted is very good interest on £14, and that Dunkinson did not experience, under the circumstances, any very great hardship in waiting for payment of that amount.
    As to the tender of the money. When a new committee of the Richmond Cricket Club came into existence, in September, 1867, they negotiated with Roland Newberry an arrangement, considered mutually advantageous, for tho management of the Richmond Cricket Club ground, and Dunkinson was informed by myself that no further engagement would be made with him, that possession of the pavilion was required, and that the club were ready to pay what was due to him on obtaining possession. This was with the full concurrence of Mr. Bond, the contractor for building the pavilion, which he will corroborate if necessary.
    As I have said, Mr. Bond consented to the proceedings of the committee above stated ; and so far from Dunkinson protecting Bond, he refused to give possession according to that gentleman's written order, and to several personal demands by Mr. Bond himself, and in fact sets every one at defiance. No doubt Dunkinson was quite willing, as he says, to take the money "then and there" unconditionally, but knowing" his designs as to the pavilion, the committee were not foolish enough to part, with the money on such terms, although it was on the table, and ready to be paid to him on giving up possession, either then or within a fortnight.
    - With regard to the defence to Dunkinson's County Court action, he should remember that "what is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander," and he having decided to "stick to the pavilion" because there were "legal difficulties" in the way of the club turning him out, that the same "legal difficulties" militated against his obtaining a verdict ; and that before he can claim equity he must act equitably himself.
    In conclusion, I beg to say that myself and the other members of the Richmond Cricket Club have been anxious to act-fairly and honourably in this matter, and that if Dunkinson had been willing to do the same he would long since have been paid his claim of £14 ; and, as far as this club is concerned, no occasion would have arisen for his going through the court. From my own knowledge, I can say that Dunkinson's conduct in keeping possession has damaged the club to the extent of at least £100. That possibly may be a satisfaction to him, not to

  • 20 Dec 1907: THE OLDEST COLONIST. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS.
    Sir,— Mr. W. Dunkinson, of Narre Warren, Gippsland, if not the oldest colonist, must be very near it, as he was brought to Victoria in 1838 from Sydney by his parents, who came over with a squatter whose name escapes my memory just at present. He brought cattle, horses, and sheep with him in a small schooner, and actually brought bricks also, and built a cottage in Russell-street, near the corner of Flinders-lane. The house must have been well built, as it stood the wear and tear of time well, and it was only within the last few years that it was removed, to make room for new buildings. Mr. Dunkinson will be 72 years of age on the 14th of February, and is in perfect health, and plays cricket regularly with the Narre Warren team. He has never been out of Victoria since his arrival. In the sixties he was a prominent player for the Richmond Cricket Club, and was such a good bowler that Billy Caffyn, the great English player, wished him to go to England, and play for Surrey, but he declined. He has witnessed nearly all the intercolonial and international matches.

  • 21 May 1930: Out at 94. J. V. Dunkinson Passes
    At the grand old age of 94 years, John Valentine Dunkinson, one of Victorias's oldest, cricket and football identities, died at his home at Narree Warren (Vic.), on May 14.
    He was born at Yass, N.S.W., in 1836, and came to Melbourne in 1838.
    The voyage round from Sydney in a sailing vessel took six weeks. He was the first member of the Richmond Cricket Club, and helped to make the ground at Punt Road.
    As a young man Dunkinson was a keen all-round athlete. He played football, was a fair cricketer, a fast runner, and was a very devoted follower of coursing. He was a friend of the late H. C. A. Harrison, and with that veteran and others helped to pave the way for the greatness of present-day Australian football.
    He played a lot of cricket with Gisborne, and in one match took sixteeen wickets, ten wickets being taken in one innings. He witnessed the first interstate cricket match in Victoria beween Victoria and Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania). The match was played opposite the Spencer Street Station.
    The late Mr Dunkinson umpired the first football match under recognised rules. This was between Carlton and Melbourne. He took a keen interest in cricket and football right up till the time of his death, and was always pleased to receive sporting men at his home at Narree Warren. Mr Syd. Sherrin frequently took parties out there to see him.11

    During the last ten years much of the land, near Melbourne, which was utilised originally for the production of vegetables, has become more valuable for residential purposes, and the market gardeners have been compelled to go further back.
    Of the localities chosen outside of the metropolitan area, the results at Werribee, the Mornington Peninsula, and other places within easy reach, have been satisfactory, but inquiries are being made in regard to the suitableness of additional districts.
    It is believed that parts of Gippsland, which now are lying practically idle, can be made very profitable when the land is cleared of the useless scrub which covers the rich flats, and provided with a permanent water supply, in conjunction with an adequate drainage scheme.
    With the object of finding suitable land, in which vegetables might be grown profitably for the requirements of the city consumers, the Water Commission gave the matter attention about 18 months ago. As the result of expert investigation, and approval, properties were purchased on either side of the main Gippsland railway-line at Narre Warren.
    General reference was made to the acquirement of 3600 acres, in last week's issue, and the work of clearing, draining, and otherwise making the land ready to be cultivated intensively, under a system of pipe irrigation.
    Although it will be several months yet before the scheme is advanced sufficiently to enable the commission to make all of the blocks available for settlement, in holdings of from 15 to 20 acres, some of the properties on what has been named the Narre Warren Estate, were allotted last October.
    Easy Purchase Terms
    So far as proximity to the Melbourne markets, and location generally, are concerned, the extensive area which is being prepared for specialised cultivation, at Narre Warren, by the Water Commission, has exceptional advantages. The land is only miles from the local railway station, seven from the town of Dandenong, and 26 from Melbourne.
    In this section there are 600 acres of rich, friable loam that can be worked easily, and irrigated through sprinklers, for the operation of which there is plenty of pressure in the pipes that are 18 inches in diameter, and two feet in places.
    A permanent supply of water is assured from the Bunyip scheme, which will be completed shortly. Already there is ample for requirements, but when the channels are extended as far into the hills as is proposed, there will be no scarcity in the driest years.
    Ample provision has been made for the drainage of each of the blocks, and there will be nothing to fear from seepage in the lowest portions of the settlement.
    Good metal, roads have been constructed so that vehicular traffic will be no more difficult in the middle of winter than in the dry months.
    For the right to acquire a block of this rich land, with the advantages mentioned, the purchase terms can be made to extend over a period of 36½ years if the settler desires.
    The half-yearly payments, therefore, are very small, and the financial burden which the closer settlement purchase involves is lightened by the fact that advances up to £625 will be made by the commission in respect to 80 per cent, of the value of permanent improvements which the settler effects on his holding.
    Similar conditions will be associated with the area of 3000 acres in the Hallam valley, which now is being prepared by the commission on the same thorough lines as have been given effect, to at the Narre Warren estate.
    The Hallam valley land is considered, by those who are conversant with the producing properties of both sections, to be richer than the other, with less distance to the railway stations at Hallam, Narre Warren or Berwick, past which the estate runs.
    Financial Conditions
    Already the suitableness of the land for the production of vegetables has been demonstrated on one of the Narre Warren estate blocks, for which the right to occupy, under the closer settlement conditions, was only issued last October by the commission.
    At the first allocation Mr W. W. Scott was the successful applicant for allotment 9 in section 2 of the subdivision.
    The value of the land was assessed at £47 an acre, and the size of the block was 15 acres 20 perches.
    For the purchase of this holding Mr Scott has incurred a liability of £710 17/6, which is to be liquidated in half-yearly instalments of £20/14/, or the full amount of the balance of the purchase money may be paid at any time instead of waiting for 36½ years to obtain the crown grant of the land.
    On the payment of £22/2/6, which covered the deposit, lease and registration fees, the applicant obtained permission from the commission to settle on the block and engage in whatever branch of intense cultivation he considered would he the most profitable.
    These conditions mean that for the conditional purchase of a 15-acre block on the well-favored Narre Warren estate, the settler will only have to pay £41/8/ a year.
    This would be regarded as an exceedingly low rental, but when it is remembered that the half-yearly payments are reducing the liability and going towards the purchase of the property, the value of the asset which is being acquired so easily will be realised.
    Possibilities Indicated
    Shortly after Mr Scott became the conditional possessor of the irrigable block on the Narre Warren estate, which was surrounded by a substantial fence, drained and cleared, he ploughed the whole of the 15 acres, about eight or nine inches deep, with a heavy disc implement that was drawn by a powerful tractor.
    Subsequently the roughly stirred soil was reduced to the desired tilth, with suitable cultivating appliances, and the plots were sown on November 11 with French beans, peas, turnips, carrots, parsnips and other kinds of vegetables. Three acres were devoted to French beans, three to Yorkshire Hero peas and the tubers of potatoes were planted on seven acres. Although dry weather set in when the seeds were sown the sprinklers, which were attached to 3 pipes, enabled the required amount of moisture to be distributed and a rapid germination was followed by more vigorous growth than usually from land only recently turned over in the manner described.
    There are five main headlands, 20 feet wide, running through the land from these the sections have symmetrically laid out. Some idea of the fertility of the land will be realised when it is stated that in less than three weeks from the time sowing the seeds of radishes well developed roots were being dug.
    From the seeds of white turnips that were sown on November 20, large sound bulbs were lifted on January 12. Already Mr Scott has raised and disposed of 50.000 seedlings of cabbages and cauliflowers that were grown in the nursery plots and thousands more of these young plants are being cultivated for other growers in the district.
    It must not be overlooked that, while the skill of the cultivator is apparent, the undoubted richness of the land has accounted for much of the success which has been accomplished in less than three months.
    Crops Now Maturing
    For some time Mr Scott has been obtaining returns from the fast growing crops such as radish, while turnips, lettuce, cress, mustard and green onions, as well as the seedlings of cabbages and cauliflowers, but soon he will be marketing large quantities of French beans, peas and prime potatoes.
    Last Week the French bean crop reached the stage when large, crisp pods were fit to be gathered. The peas also have advanced sufficiently to be marketed, and the settler has arranged to have 10 or 12 pickers at work for some time.
    Land that can account for returns from French beans and peas, in a little more than two months after the seeds were sown, bespeaks a wonderful amount of fertility and indicates
    that the judgment of the advisers to the Water Commission, in their recommendation of the Narre Warren locality for market gardening purposes already has been supported, and it has been shown that equally good results may be obtained from the whole of the land on both of the estates.
    On the present appearance of the crops which now are being gathered, and those that will be fit for the market later in the season, Mr Scott estimates that the gross return will amount to between £800 and £1000.
    Everything, of course, will depend on the prices which rule, but on the averages of previous seasons the sum stated is considered to be attainable.
    Mr J. L. Crawley has obtained a block of 16 acres, adjoining that of Mr Scott's, at £47 an acre. Before deciding on the land at Narre Warren Mr Crawley made examinations of areas in other districts, and could find nothing so suitable for market gardening at less than £100 an acre.
    The liability of the block on the Narre Warren estate amounts to £781/7/6, whereas it would have totalled £1600 for no better land elsewhere.
    In addition, there are the advantages of an assured supply of water, effective drainage, access to the Melbourne markets by rail, or over excellent roads, and the easiest possible purchasing terms.
    Cultural Methods
    Before Mr. Scott ploughed the land he broadcasted a ton of market garden manure, and turned it under.
    When the soil had been broken down sufficiently to be seeded, 1½ tons of the mixture known as the complete fertiliser was placed through the loose soil to a depth of between three and four inches.
    These quantities have been found to be liberal enough for the free rooting of the vegetables in the fresh land, but heavier dressing will be necessary to maintain vigor in the following crops, which will be cultivated continuously throughout the year.
    Mr. Scott is of the opinion that half a ton to the acre, every second year, will keep the ground in good heart, and that the refuse which it will be necessary to turn under from time to time, will keep up the supply of humus, if it is not possible to get stable manure.
    Apart from the main crops of French beans (Canadian Wonder variety), Yorkshire Hero peas, and Carmen potatoes, Mr Scott has a varied assortment of other vegetables in the balance of the block.
    Included in the list are tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, kohl rabi, parsnips, spinach, sweet corn or table maize, cabbages, cauliflowers, silver beet, and different kinds of the melon family.
    Between the rows of vegetables maize is being cultivated in single lines, for sheltering purposes, and the results have exceeded expectations.
    Runner beans, which were started later than the other crops, soon will be placed on the pole supports, and the early growth of them promises to to be followed by heavy crops in
    autumn. The varieties are scarlet runners, epicure and white butch.
    An Inspiring Example
    At the present time the vegetable crops on Mr. Scott's block are as healthy looking and vigorous as the most exacting could desire, and the condition of them should be an inspiring example to the others who are making a start on the Narre Warren estate.
    In every section of the block there are evidences of the skilled culturist, but it is apparent that the soil contains the elements of rapid growth.
    This fact is important in view of the arrangements which have been made by the Water Commission for the utilisation of such a large area as included in the two estates that have been acquired for the purpose of being cultivated intensively.
    Always it is the personal element which determines the success of rural effort, and while Mr. Scott has succeeded in establishing a very, high standard of market gardening efficiency, there are indications that the soil and climatic conditions in the Narre Warren and Hallam districts are exceptionally favorable.
