This is a splendid chance for a man with a little capital to purchase, or a man with a family, say, of two or three good sized sons to lease, as it would make a lovely home, in this healthiest part of Victoria.

From private to colonel is the proud distinction of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel J. J. Corrigan, formerly of Zeenan. His father, John Leonard Corrigan, of Austin's ferry, near Hobart, has received an official document, showing that Lieutenant-Colonel Corrigan was slightly wounded and remained on duty. This is the second occasion on which he has been injured. He was only 27 years of age last May, and won his first commission on Gallipoli. He was rapidly promoted to captain, and on arrival in France his conspicuous gallantry won him the rank of major. Prior to enlisting he was engaged in mining operations at Zeehan.23

R.M.S. Ormonde, from London via ports, reached Melbourne yesterday with a large number of passengers in first, second and third classes. This complement which totalled about 1100 persons, when the vessel left London, included 92 settlers for Victoria, 50 of whom were nominated passengers. The settlers included former service men, mechanics and country workers. A birth occurred in the third class on 1st May, and the baby—a girl—was christened May Ormonde by Rev. Mr. Emery, who left the vessel at South Australia.
The Ormonde left London just as the coal crisis was developing. She had some difficulty in obtaining coal supplies, and after obtaining sufficient for the first portion of the voyage she replenished bunkers en route at the various coaling stations, which are said to be comparatively well stocked with fuel. The most uncomfortable weather conditions experienced during the voyage, it was stated yesterday, was off the Australian coast, particularly when approaching Port Phillip, on Wednesday evening in a south-westerly gale.
The Ormond is to resume her passage to Sydney to-day.25
  • 23 Jun 1921: HAWTHORN. A meeting to form a branch of the Self-Determination for Ireland League of Australia was held at Hawthorn on Thursday evening, June 18th. Notwithstanding the extremely wet weather, there was a large attendance, and at the conclusion of the meeting a strong branch was formed and an energetic committee elected.
Mr. J. J. Corrigan said that he addressed them as one who had just come back from Ireland, where he had had opportunities of witnessing at first hand the blighting influence of the policy being carried out by the British Government, through its representatives, the Black and Tans. He detailed some of the shocking outrages perpetrated on inoffensive Irish citizens by the Crown forces, and made an eloquent appeal for all to join the Self-Determination for Ireland League and thus help to bring these dastardly crimes, and the hellish policy that inspired them, under the notice of the Australian democracy.
Mr. E. Adams said that the formation of a branch of the League in Hawthorn would give those who were in sympathy with its objects a splendid opportunity of allying themselves with the large body of Australian citizens who were prepared to recognise the right of the people of Ireland to choose freely, without coercion or dictation from outside, their own governmental institutions and their political relationship with other States and peoples. The principle upon which the organisation was based was different from anything hitherto adopted by those supporting the case for Ireland. Irish agitation in the past had succeeded in antagonising possible friends more than it succeeded in uniting those of Irish birth or descent. The question as presented by the Self-Determination League had several aspects:—Universal, Irish, English, and Australian. At the present time interest was focussed on the Australian aspect. There was a strong probability that the question of Ireland would be brought before the conference of Dominion Prime Ministers, and to guard against false views being placed before that conference a series of meetings were being held throughout the length and breadth of Australia, in order to convince the conference that there was a large body of democratic opinion in Australia favourable to the just rights of the Irish people being conceded to them.
He considered that if the question were brought forward at the conference, the Prime Ministers, by reason of their being accorded the status of independent nations, would not only be inconsistent in supporting the British policy of coercion in Ireland, but would be logically bound, as representatives of small nations, to insist that England should abandon its present policy towards another weak nation—Ireland.
The movement in Ireland was just as completely a constitutional issue as that decided at the last Parliamentary elections in South Africa. Over and over again, with a unanimity unparalleled in political history, Ireland has decided in favour of a Republican form or government. That she has done so is in accordance with her own rights, and is no concern of Australia. The party which stood for secession in South Africa tested the question in a constitutional way at the ballot-box. If they had won, would the British Government have attempted to flood the country with troops?
Would they have unloosed their Black and Tans and Auxiliaries on the South African people to perpetrate those horrors which are antagonising the world against England? The fight must be carried on through such organisations as the Self-Determination League until the constitutional wishes of the Irish people are recognised by England.26

Newspaper-Articles

  • 7 Dec 1901: HOTEL LICENSE REFUSED.
LESLIE Charles Timmis, licensee of the Bay View Hotel, Hopkins-street, Footscray, applied to the Metropolitan Licensing Court on Thursday, for a renewal of his license.
Inspector McGann opposed the application on the grounds that the applicant had assaulted people on several occasions, and that he was absent from his licensed premises the greater part of the year. Mr Maloney appeared for the defence, and pointed out that there had been no prosecutions in connection with the alleged assaults, and contended that Mr Timmis had not been absent from his licensed premises for more than 28 days at a time, the period mentioned by the Act. Applicant stated that he had been persecuted by the police because he lodged complaints against Constables Holden, Nolan and Reeves, of Melbourne. The police had had five cases against him during the last six months. Mr R H Lemon, secretar Licensed Victuallers Asociation, said that he regarded the applicant as a honest, sturdy, and upright man, and one of the best members of the Association.
The Bench held that the ground of objection re the applicant's absence from his premises at Footscray had been sustained, and the renewal was refused with £10 10s costs against applicant.4
