Jim Parkes in his butcher shop (Image from Cardinia Shire interpretation board) |
Note* | | Jim and his twin brother Tom were born in 1923, into a family that lived in Woods Street, Beaconsfield. Jim left school at the age of 14 to work at the butcher shop owned by Dick Cole, which was originally located on the highway before moving to Woods Street. In 1943, Jim joined the army and served for 3 years, then returned to work at the butcher shop. In the 1950's, Jim was appointed manager of the shop when it was purchased by Pat Sweeney. Jim went on to buy the business in 1968, naming it 'Beaconsfield Meat Supply'. When Jim retired, his son Bryan continued the business and then after 56 years of trading the shop closed in 1995. Jim was an active and involved member of the Beaconsfield community over many years. He was the first person to be appointed as a life member of the Beaconsfield Football Club, where he served as President and Secretary. He was a committee member of the original Beaconsfield Hall, which was located on the highway. Jim was secretary and often Master of Ceremonies at the regular dances. Jim and his brother Tom were instrumental in the erection of the Beaconsfield Park Memorial Gates to commemorate the soldiers who served in World War I. Jim also served on committees for Beaconsfield Primary School, Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve and Beaconsfield Scout group, and was a trustee of the Beaconsfield War Memorial and the Beaconsfield Kindergarten. Jim Parkes Reserve was officially opened in February 1990 by Pakenham Shire President Cr Ted Owen, in recognition of Jim's significant contribution to the local community. |
