  • 15 Mar 1892: Absence made the heart grow fonder.
About the year 1884 or 1885 a Mrs Annie Isabella Kemball obtained an order for maintenance against her husband, a ship's officer named John Smith Kemball, at the Williamstown Court. The order was for 15s, and the husband went away to sea. This week Mr Shea, Clerk of Courts, received a letter from the husband enclosing a large sum of for his wife, whose address is now enquired for.11
  • 21 Jun 1906: Inquest.
At the Hospital on Tuesday an inquest was held on the body of Annie Isabel Kemball, found at Kew on Monday afternoon. Mr F. G. Stone, J.P., acted as coroner, and the jury were Messrs William Wade (foreman), William Strang, E. B. Gee, W. M. McLean, J. J. Wildermoth, and C. S. Ross. Sergeant Matheson conducted the enquiry.
    C. S. Longuet deposed that he had known the deceased intimately for 18 months. Her full name was Annie Isabel Kemball, known otherwise as Mrs Buchanan. He last saw her alive on Saturday. She was not in good health. Unquestionably her mind was weak. Witness had reported to the police that her actions should be supervised. About a week previously witness had called in Dr Hunter to examine deceased, and the police were inforemed. Deceased was taken to the Hospital and examined by Drs. Snow and Crawford who could not certify that she was insane and decided to discharge her. Witness was informed, and on the 15th took deceased home. In the evening he called to see her and found her fairly settled. He persuaded her to go to bed, and was informed that she did so. He called again on Saturday, when she seemed quite cheerful. On Sunday he saw one of the children, who said that deceased was quietly at home. On Monday one of the children informed witness that deceased had left home. Witness thereupon informed the police, and the finding of the body was afterwards reported. Deceased left five children.
three girls and two boys. The eldest was 14 years of age. All the children were born while deceased was living with Buchanan. The deceased had a husband named Kemball, who was supposed to be alive and living in England.
Since separating from Kenball the deceased had lived with Buchanan as his wife. Buchanan died about 18 months ago. The children were provided for, and were under the guardianship of witness.
To a juror: Dr. Hunter had said that there were no sufficient reasons for keeping the deceased in custody, but it would be advisable to have her taken care of. This was the reason why witness made numerous visits to the house.
Dr. Alexander F. R. Crawford, relieving-house surgeon at the Southland Hospital said deceased was brought to the Hospital on the 7th June. Witness first saw her or the 10th. Understood that she had attempted suicide by taking matches. In reply to witness deceased said she had had a lot of trouble, and her husband’s friends would have nothing to do with her. There was no sign of insanity about her. She was rational in every way. On Friday, 15th, deceased asked to be allowed to leave the hospitat as she wanted to see her children. Witness communicated with Mr Longuet, who made arrangements about taking her out and she was accordingly discharged. Witness made enquiries from the matron and the nurses and all reported that there were no signs of insanity. To a juror: While in the hospital deceased seemed worried about her children. A nerve tonic was prescribed for her. He would think it likely that she suffered from periodical fits of depression. She thought people looked down on her. Before leaving she told witness she would not attempt her life again.
Thomas Jordan, carter, Kew, identified deceased as a person who passed his house about 11 o'clock on 18th June. She was walking along the railway line towards Invercargill with her head down. Witness saw her several times again walking up and down the beach. He last saw her about 12.30. From what his little boy told him some time afterwards witness found the body lying about a chain from the railway line in the estuary. The body had been under water. The tide had gone out and left it above water. There was no life in the body. Witness caused the matter to be reported to the police. A small handbag was lying about 10 yards away. To the coroner: At high water there would be about six inches of water over the body.
Constable Russell, who found the body, said there were no marks or abrasions on it. He made a search and found nothing but the handbag (produced), which contained letters and papers. The clothing was saturated with water. Witness removed the body to the morgue.
After a few minutes' consultation the jury found a verdict of "Found drowned, there being no suspicion of foul play, and the evidence being insufficient to show what state of mind deceased was in at the time."12

NOTE

Some family sections show only the children who were associated with Upper Beaconsfield.

Some individuals may be featured because members of their family were associated with the Upper Beaconsfield area, even though they themselves never lived here.
