  • 14 Jan 1920: Rifle Accident. Girl Shot Dead. Crows Nest This Morning. TOOWOOMBA, January 14.
A sad shooting accident occurred at Crow's Nest shortly before 8 o'clock this morning, when Gladys Brisbane, 11 years of age, daughter of Sergeant Brisbane, police officer at Crow's Nest, was shot dead. Sergeant Brisbane is on transfer to Cairns, and, being unable to secure steamer accommodation, was to do three months' duty in Toowoomba. He himself came to Toowoomba yesterday, and his wife and family of a boy and a girl were to follow this morning. They were just about to start breakfast at the residence of a neighbour, when Gladys Brisbane was conversing with a boy 14 years old. A breechloader gun was standing in the corner, and the girl said, "is that the gun you were shooting with yesterday ?" The boy replied in the affirmative and added, "I must put it away before it does any damage." As he went to remove the gun, the trigger evidently became caught in the chair and went off, the charge entering the neck of the girl, who was standing only three feet away. She died immediately.6
  • 15 Jan 1920: SHOOTING SENSATION. FATALITY AT CROW'S NEST. SERGEANT BRISBANE'S DAUGHTER KILLED.
A sad shooting fatality occurred at Crow's Nest shortly before 8 o'clock yesterday morning as a result of which Gladys Brisbane, 11 years of age, met her death. Sergeant Brisbane, the father of the deceased girl who as police officer at Crow's Nest for a period of eight years or more was very well known, some time ago received notice of his transfer to Cairns. Difficulty, however, was met in securing passages on a boat for the North for himself and family, and on Monday the sergeant came into Toowoomba to meet his chiefs. As a result, it was resolved that Sergt. Brisbane should undertake three months duty in this city. The sergeant returned to Crow's Nest but returned on Tuesday, having arranged for his wife and family to come into the city yesterday.
Mrs. Brisbane, with her daughter Gladys, aged 11, and her young son spent, the night at the residence of a neighbour, Mr. J. Chambers. Yesterday morning, shortly before 8 c'lock, the party was about to partake of breakfast when the unfortunate incident happened. It appears that Jack Chambers, —the 14 year-old son of the household, had been out shooting on the previous day and his breech-loading gun, apparantly loaded, had been placed in a corner of the dining-room. The boy was conversing with Gladys Brisbane shortly before breakfast, when the girl asked, 'Is that the gun you were out shooting with yesterday?'
The boy replied in the affirmitive, at the same time stating, 'I must move it before it does any damage. He stooped to shift the weapon and apparently the trigger of the gun caught in a chair which was standing close by, for the weapon went off and the charge entered the neck of Gladys Brisbane, who was standing about three feet away from the boy. Her death was instantaneous.
The explosion of the weapon quickly brought other members of the house hold and several neighbours into the room, but the unfortunate girl was beyond human aid. Her father was communicated with by telephone and taking a car from Toowoomba he covered the distance in about an hour. Dr. Kenny had been called in in the meantime, but he pronounced life to be extinct.
Sergeant Brisbane and his wife have been the recipients of many messages of condolence and sympathy in the township, where they were extremely popular.
The funeral will take place this morning at 11 o'clock from the residence of Mr. William Haas, Newington street, Spring Hill, for the Toowoomba cemetery.
A magisterial inquiry will be held to-day before Messrs. W. A. Y. Jeffries and Ray White.7
  • 17 Jan 1920: FATAL SHOOTING ACCIDENTS.
Deep gloom was cast over the town this morning (says a message from Crow's Nest dated Wednesday), when it became known that a fatal gun accident had occurred, and which resulted in the instantaneous death of Gladys Brisbane, aged 11 years, the only daughter of Police-sergeant M. E. Brisbane and Mrs. Brisbane, formerly of Toowoomba. Sergeant Brisbane had been tranferred from Crow's Nest to Cairns, and was doing temporary duty in Toowoomba prior to leaving for his new district. Mrs. Brisbane and her two children intended to proceed to Toowoomba this morning and, prior to her departure, Mrs. J. Chambers, a neighbor, was preparing breakfast for them. It appears that Mrs. Chambers's children and Mrs. Brisbane's children were playing together. From the account of little Jack Chambers, it seems that he and the deceased child went into the kitchen and noticed a gun standing near wall, where it had been left from the previous night. Little Jack, who is 16 years of age, said that he would put it away before any harm was done. On turning round, the gun evidently caught on a chair, and the hammer was drawn back sufficiently to cause the gun, which was a heavy choke-bore breech-loader, to go off. The charge entered the neck of the girl just below the ear and carried away most of the poor girl's neck. Dr. Kenny was immediately called, but on arrival he pronounced life extinct.8
  • 4 Feb 1920: THE CROW'S NEST TRAGEDY.
An inquiry was commenced at the City Police Court yesterday into the circumstances of the death of Gladys Brisbane at Crow's Nest on January 13.
Evidence of the brother (Sydney Edwin), and of the father (Acting-sergeant Matthew Edwin Brisbane) was taken, and the inquiry adjourned to Crow's Nest on a date to be fixed.9
