Newspaper-Articles

  • 14 Mar 1890: DEATH OF MR. R. R. WEARING.
It is with unfeigned regret we have to record the death of Mr. Richard Robert Wearing, who peacefully departed this life, after a short illness, at noon on Friday last, aged 49. Vague symptoms of an internal disease were felt by him about the beginning of December, shortly after which he consulted Dr. Atkinson, at Sandhurst, but no good effects resulted; and some three weeks before his death, being then in a very weak state from his inability to retain food, he was conveyed to Sandhurst, where for some days he was under the care of Dr. Atkinson and Hinchcliff, who, we are given to understand, were unable to diagnose the complaint of their patient. He then returned home, and never improved, but gradually became weaker from the inability of his stomach to retain nourishment, although he had a craving for food. He naturally suffered from langour and weakness, but was otherwise comparatively free from pain. When he took to his bed, he expressed his belief that he would not recover, but happily became resigned to his hard fate, and met his death with peaceful resignation. According to the medical certificate, the cause of death was cancer of the stomach. Mr. Wearing was born in London, "within sound of Bow bells," and came with his father to Victoria at the age of 12. At 21 he joined tbe Mounted Police, and at various times was stationed in Gippsland, at Rushworth, and lastly in Elmore, where about 6 years ago he resigned, and commenced business as a general storekeeper, which he followed with success, and a little previous to his illness had commenced substantial additions to his already extensive premises. The deceased gentleman never took a very active part in public matters, but helped by his enterprise and belief in the future of the township to keep together and improve the local trade. As a citizen he was respected, and as a business man esteemed for his honest, straightforward principles, and his death has caused genuine regret throughout the community. He leaves a wife and a son and daughter to mourn their loss. The funeral which took place on Saturday afternoon, was numerously attended, the cortege including 25 vehicles. On arrival at the Cemetery gates the procession was met by the Rev. T. W. Davis, and the remains were borne to the grave by Messrs. Shotton, Milton, Vanthoff, Thomas, Schilling, and Pook. The Rev. Mr. Davis then read the Church of England burial service, and concluded with a few remarks suited to the occasion. Upon the coffin were several wreaths and a cross, beautifully designed in flowers.4

  • 9 Jul 1921: OBITUARY
The death of Mrs. Jane M. C. Davis, which occurred rather suddenly at her home, 258 Barkly-street, on Wednesday morning, has removed one of the oldest identities of the city. Born within the sound of Bow Bells 78 years ago, she was a true Londoner, and came to Footscray with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Wearing, when a girl of 10. In those days there were no trains to Footscray, and the party had to make the journey by boat. Going to North Melbourne meant a long trudge across the Kensington flats on planks. The deceased married the late Mr. George Davis, who was Footscray's first draper, and their family is one of the best known in the district. There were five sons and one daughter, of whom four sons—Messrs. H. C., H. G., A. R., and B. F. Davis—survive. To them the sympathy of a wide circle of friends is extended.6
