  • 14 Sep 1936: ALL-BLUE WEDDING. Oriental Gowns for Maids.
Pale golden daffodils, massed in profusion in the church, provided a charming foil for the unusual all-blue motif chosen for the picturesque bridal retinue at the wedding of Miss Betty Stewart and Mr. N. Chaldjian on Saturday evening. St. John's, Toorak, was the setting for the ceremony, which was fully choral. The bride, who is the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Stewart, of Dandenong-road. Windsor, was given away by her father. The bridegroom is the eldest son of Madame A. Chaldjian, of Cairo, Egypt, and the late Mr. Chaldjian.
Cobweb fine Venetian lace mounted over a delicate mist-blue brocade fashioned the bride's lovely gown. Moulded on long, stately lines, the frock was draped right to the throat, and clusters of pale blue crystal blossoms were caught at either side of the high neckline. The long sheath line of the skirt was broken by a tunic, which turned back to merge into a graceful train four yards long. Over this fell a cloud-like veil of tulle the same delicate blue as her gown, mounted over white to give an added filminess and grace to the billowy tulle. Matching the flowers at the neckline of her gown, a cluster of
crystal blossoms was caught at the side of her simple tulle cap, and instead of the conventional bouquet, she wore a wide matching bracelet on her arm. Her two attendants were Miss Doreen Buchan and Miss Betty Morison. Their unusual gowns reflected a definite Oriental influence with their straight hanging Mandarin jackets of blue brocade and their full chiffon skirts caught in at the ankles. Cut with wide, loose, hanging sleeves, the brocade jackets were finished with quaint pagoda-like collars, and but toned high to the throat, where a cluster of delicate blue crystal blossoms were pinned, and carrying out the Chinese motif, they wore high combs, decorated with the same flowers, in their hair.
The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. K. Chaldjian, of Sydney, and Mr. G. A, Biteon, and following the ceremony, which was performed by Rev Dr. A. Law, Mr. and Mrs. Stewart held a reception at Menzies' Hotel. Mr. and Mrs. Chaldjian will spend their honeymoon abroad, and will leave for America by the Monterey on Wednesday, joining the vessel at Sydney.7
