  • 13 Feb 1893: FIRES IN THE GEMROOK DISTRICT. A CHILD BURNT TO DEATH. GEMBROOK, SATURDAY.
A great wave of heat has passed, or is passing, over this district and it is not surprising to hear that bush fires have been raging all over the ranges. Things reached a climax on Thursday, when fires seemed to spring out of the earth, so sudden were they in making their appearance in most unlikely places. The flames, aided by the fierce hot wind from the north, made great headway even in places where the vegetation was green and scant. In addition to the miles of fences and acres of grass that have been burnt, news comes to hand of dozens of farmers who have been completely burnt out. At Gembrook houses, sheds, and haystacks have been burnt to the ground, leaving people utterly destitute. Although it was generally known that great damage had been done in the district, it came as a painful surprise when news arrived to say that in one case at Beaconsfield fatal results had occurred. It would appear from the scanty news yet to hand that a farmer named Kirwin had one of his children burnt to death in his homestead. No doubt, whilst the other members of the family were engaged fighting the fires in different parts of the farm, the house must have caught, and before anything could be done house and child were alike destroyed. Today the weather has taken a much needed change. The wind is now from the south, and cool and damp. The fires have for the time being, at all events, burnt themselves out.6
  • 15 Feb 1893: Not so fortunate a poor woman who used to live here, but is now staying at Old Narree Warren. It appears that the poor creature, with her husband and two little children, have been living for some time past in a small hut belonging to a Mr. Lardner. It would appear that the mother had left the house in order to get water from the creek, which was some little distance, and meanwhile the baby, left to its own resources, may have obtained access to a box of matches, and in experimenting after the fashion of children arrived at the terrible conclusion which brought about its end. However this may be, on the return of the parent the house was in flames and the unfortunate infant burnt to a cinder, only a portion of one arm, I am told, being rescued from the omnivorous element. I mention this melancholy case, as the woman, a Mrs. Kerwan, formerly resided for a time in this neighborhood. Although both husband and wife had the reputation whilst here of being willing and hard workers, they certainly have been most unfortunate. Now, let us hope the climax has come.7

Death-Notice*10 Apr 1897 SMITH.— On the 2nd April, at his late residence, Weerona, Fitzroy-street and Park-road, St. Kilda, George Elms Smith, beloved husband of Annie Smith, aged 41 years. Suddenly.11
Death-Notice10 Apr 1897 THE LATE G. ELMS SMITH. An ex-Councillor of Prahran.
His many friends will regret to hear of the very sudden death of Mr George Elms Smith, which occurred on Wednesday last at his late residence, "Weerona," Fitzroy-street, St. Kilda.
The deceased for some time represented tbe Windsor Ward in the Prahran Council, retiring in August, 1890. He was born at South Melbourne, then known as Emerald Hill, in 1855, at Bank-street. He received his education at the Church of England Grammar School, under the late Dr. Bromby. As a boy he entered the service of the once well known firm of M' Arthur, Sherrard and Copeland, of Flinders-lane, with whom he remained 10 years, eventually rising to the position of the firm's representative in the railway towns. Subsequently he was engaged by Messrs. L. Stevenson and Son, and occupied a leading position in their warehouse, which he resigned in order to enter into business on his own account. He purchased an hotel and land at Caulfield that proved a very successful venture.
He also took a warm interest in opening up East Malvern and Caulfield. Finally he established himself in Prahran, with which he had had many years business connections, as an auctioneer and estate agent, and during the excitement of the land boom earned the title of a "straight goer." He entered public life in '87 (officially) when he contested the Windsor Ward of the Prahran City Council rendered vacant by the retirement of Cr. Wighton, being returned by a large majority. The deceased went to Tasmania in March of 1890, having purchased a station at Riverton, on the Derwent. More recently he returned to St. Kilda, and took up his residence at "Weerona," Fitzroy-street and Park-road. He took a deep interest in racing and cricket, and was one of the original shareholders in the Coal Creek, an interest he maintained up to the time of his death.
The deceased had occasion to visit Ballarat last week in the interests of the Great Victorian Coal Mine, of which he was a director. He caught a cold on his return journey, which developed into pleurisy and pneunomia, resulting in his death on Wednesday as stated. He leaves a widow and six children.
The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by the friends of the deceased and his Masonic brethren, the late Mr. Smith being a leading member of the Shakespeare Lodge, 124, U.G.L.V., in which he held the office of I.P.M. The sister lodges were fully represented, the regalia being draped in deep mourning. The body was encased in a leaden coffin which was further enclosed in an oaken casket. The funeral left his late residence shortly after three, the pall-bearers being Messrs. James Bruce, W. L Flint, W. W. Williams, — Robertson, P. Griffith and J. Brown, and proceeded to the Brighton Cemetery, the remains being interred in the Church of England section. The deceased was buried with full Masonic honors, the officiating clergymen being the Rev. Stanley Low, chaplain of the forces, and a brother mason.
The mortuary arrangements were excellently carried out by Mr. W. G. Apps, High-street, St. Kilda.12

Death-Notice22 Nov 1889 SMITH. —On the 21st inst., at Sydney, Richard Algernon Smith, aged 29, late of Melbourne.1
Death-Notice*30 Nov 1889 SUDDEN DEATH OF A POPULAR VICTORIAN. The Late Mr. Richard Algernon Smith. Died on his Twenty-ninth Birthday. Deep regret has been expressed at the news, from Sydney, of the untimely and sudden death of Mr. Richard A. Smith, a gentleman well known in this district. The deceased, who was a younger brother of Cr. George Elms Smith, of Prahran, was thrown from a vehicle on the 16th inst., sustaining an injury to one of his arms which eventuated in blood poisoning, his death ensuing on the 21st inst.—his 29th birthday. From the time Mr. Smith left school, until about two years ago, he was associated with the well-known business of Mr. James Hingston, of Chancery-lane, and few men were better known, or more popular. Twelve years ago he was an ardent supporter of junior cricket, and proved a very successful bowler. For many years he was a leading light, in the Essendon Amateur Dramatic Club, and frequently with fellow members of that club visited the country towns and played in aid of charities. He also appeared at the Opera House, in aid of the funds of the Royal Humane Society, as Lord Pluto, in Buxton's comic dramas, "A Rough Diamond." His death has caused deep regret amongst a large circle of acquaintances, and his relatives here have received many expressions of sympathy.2
