This morning the missing papers in the case in which Mr. Clive Durant is concerned, were found wrapped in some old papers in an almirah. The Police, it seems, had all the contents of the cuphoared turned out and looked over every paper in turn, with the result that Mr. Durant's pocket-book and the papers reported to have disappeared, were found.—Our Correspondent.
THE BOMBAY EXTORTION CASE. DURANT FINED FOR CONTEMPT. Bombay, May 25th. The Durant case came up for hearing today when nothing specie1 took place. Durant however, persisted in addressing the court making use of abusive epithets, which resulted in his being fined Rs. 200 for contempt. The case eventually was adjourned to June 2nd.— Our correspondent.34

  • 3 Sep 1900: Death of father. The Times of India writes:—A personality which has been much before the public at odd times in odd ways during the last 10 years has disappeared in the death, on the 9th instant, at the European General Hospital, of Clive Durant. His story, if he had told it, would have been an interesting one, for he had played many parts and found himself in strange situations. He died in poverty, for the role of the "sea lawyer," though it earns prominence, seldom leads to profit. That role, however, he played with a certain distinction, and after his last appearance in the High Court be went up amazingly in the admiration of the people who made use of him. He had good hopes then of starting upon a prosperous career in his own peculiar line, but he was disappointed, and the struggle to live, which had never been an easy one, was too much for him. Those who were most inconvenienced by Durant's attentions will not deny him the parting tribute of admitting that he was at all events clever enough to make things unpleasant for other people.36
