  • 1 Aug 1945: Sad Fatality At Officer
LAST THURSDAY, John William Penner, 18, a popular employee of James Hicks’ Brickworks at Officer, was killed in tragic circumstances in Station St., Officer, when he fell under the wheels of a heavily laden truck.
The accident happened at about 1.20 p.m., when deceased's foot apparently slipped as he jumped from the running board of one of the firm’s trucks, and the wheels passed over him.
Bill, as he was known to all, had been riding on the running board, and the truck had slowed down to let him off. He received serious injuries, and after treatment by Dr. Percy Langmore, was rushed to the Alfred Hospital, where he passed away at about 10.40 p.m. the same evening.
Always cheerful and friendly, the late Bill Penner is deeply mourned by a wide circle of sincere friends. There was a large crowd at the grave-side when his remains were interred in the Berwick Cemetery on Monday last. Rev. W. P. Daunt conducted the service. Amelia Elizabeth Clements6
