  • B 1870: History Corner
Here is another budget of early history from the reminiscences of the late Mr C. W. Robinson, one of the past engineers of the Shire of Berwick.
In 1858, wheat growing being in full swing, steam thrashing machines travelled from town to town, thrashing out the wheat at the rate of 500 to 1000 bushels a day.
    FLOUR/MILL
Mr. Thomas Eggleston erected a flour mill for grinding wheat at Mr. Inglis', on the west side of the old homestead, for two years.
Thence he removed to an allotment in the township of Berwick, and excavated a large water hole to supply water for the steam engine. This did not hold water.
    PRICE DROPPED
He sold out, leaving the district, as the farmers had given up growing wheat here—the price having dropped from 20/ to 10/ per bushel—and had gone in for dairying and cheese making. The wheat that took the first prize at the Paris Exhibition about this period was grown here. Mr. Inglis let his farm to his manager, Mr. W. Brunt.
    SMOTHERED BY STRAW
While Mr. Brunt had the farm he had a stack of wheat straw. The cattle used to eat into the stack all round. A storm of wind arose, and Mr. Brunt's son ran to get under shelter. The stack blew over, smothering the child. Much sympathy was felt for the boy's parents. Ralph Brunt10
  • 20 Jul 1916: Mr. John Inglis, a very old Victorian identity, died recently at his residence, Gleniston, Wellington-street, Kew, at the age of 89 years. He was born at Burntisland, Scotland, and, when 21 years of age, came to Melbourne. He was partner with the late Mr. Guthridge in the first line of sailing vessels between Melbourne and the Gippsland Lakes. At one time he was mayor of Sale. Mr. Inglis owned properties at different times at Berwick, Tallangatta, Benalla, Kiewa, Buchan, Tarwin Lower, and Koonwarra. He leaves a daughter and four sons. His wife died about seven years ago.11
